10 Alternatives to Ibuprofen — The Pain ‘Killer’

12

Do you often pop Ibuprofen to get instant relief from headaches, toothaches, arthritis, back pain, menstrual cramps, fever, inflammation, and pain due to minor injuries? Well, one of the commonly used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) can increase the chance of a heart attack or stroke, either of which can lead to death.

The FDA warned of heart attack and stroke risk for NSAID in 2015:

This vulnerable population [who already has had a heart attack] is at an increased risk of having another heart attack or dying of heart attack-related causes if they’re treated with NSAIDs. But the risk is also present in people without cardiovascular disease… NSAIDs are effective treatments for pain, inflammation and fever. Consumers can still take them but should be aware of this increased risk of heart attack or stroke, especially at higher doses.

Ibuprofen can cause dizziness, nausea, vomiting, stomach ache, heart burn, indigestion, high blood pressure, stomach ulcers and inflammation, aggravation of asthma symptoms, and allergies. Overdose of Ibuprofen can cause disorientation, sweating, abdominal cramps and restlessness. Long term use of Ibuprofen can damage the kidneys and have severe gastrointestinal effects.

While all drugs have side-effects – even Aspirin – Ibuprofen has been found to pose the same cardiovascular risk as Vioxx. Vioxx is a drug that was removed from the market in 2004 after causing nearly 30,000 excess cases of heart attacks and sudden cardiac deaths between 1999 and 2003.

So, the next time you decide to pop Ibuprofen, be cautious – the very medication that you need to ease your pain could prove dangerous. Or better still, try one of these alternatives:

Ginger – Ginger capsules (250 mg, four times a day) are as effective as Ibuprofen for relieving pain in women associated with their menstrual cycle.

Arnica – Topical treatment with arnica is as effective as Ibuprofen – with fewer side effects – for hand osteoarthritis.

Astaxanthin, Ginkgo Biloba and Vitamin C – This combination is equal to or better than Ibuprofen for reducing asthma-associated respiratory inflammation.

Chinese Skullcap – A compound in Chinese skullcap, known as baicalin, possesses an analgesic effect in carrageenan-evoked thermal hyperalgesia and is equipotent to Ibuprofen in reducing inflammatory pain.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Omega-3 fatty acids (between 1200-2400 mg daily) are as effective as Ibuprofen – with fewer side effects – in reducing arthritis pain.

Panax Ginseng – Panax ginseng has analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity similar to Ibuprofen, indicating its possible anti-rheumatoid arthritis properties.

St. John’s Wort – St. John’s Wort is twice as effective as Ibuprofen as a pain-killer.

Anthrocyanins – Anthrocyanins extracted from raspberries and sweet cherries are as effective as Ibuprofen at suppressing the inflammation-associated enzyme known as cyclooxygenase-1 and 2.

Holy Basil – Holy basil contains compounds with anti-inflammatory activity comparable to Ibuprofen.

Virgin Olive Oil – Virgin olive oil contains numerous phenolic compounds that exert potent anti-inflammatory actions. Recently discovered phenolic compound oleocanthal in virgin olive oil, possesses similar anti-inflammatory properties to Ibuprofen.

  1. Please note the huge difference between ‘virgin’ olive oil and ‘extra virgin’ olive oil. The ‘extra’has a very strict processing procedure and is the only olive oil which gives all those wonderful health properties we read about. Furthermore, only olive oil from small-scale producers can provide these health benefits because so much is compromised in the name of convenience/efficiency with the large-scale producers and the result is a huge loss in all of the qualities that contribute to the health benefits of olive oil.
I am more than qualified to make these claims as I am very close to the production of real quality extra virgin olive oil.

  2. using simple ‘virgin’ olive oil, or ‘pure’ olive oil or ‘pomace’ olive oil or anything other than EXTRA VIRGIN is the equivalent to thinking that you can get all the health benefits of freshly squeezed orange juice from Sunny D or Tang.

  3. Kratom is an amazing all natural remedy for pain, check it out if you havent! I run sollesolutions and we have some of the best!

  4. Arnica is generally safe when used on the skin. However, using it for a long time may irritate the skin, causing eczema, peeling, blisters, or other skin conditions. Arnica should not be used on broken skin, such as leg ulcers. In one study, researchers found that arnica used topically increased leg pain 24 hours after participants performed calf exercises. Also, people who are hypersensitive or allergic to the herb should avoid it.

Arnica is rarely used as an internal herbal remedy because it can cause dizziness, tremors, and heart irregularities. It may also irritate mucous membranes and cause vomiting. Large doses can even be fatal. DO NOT take arnica by mouth except under close supervision of your doctor. You can generally take homeopathic remedies, which use extremely small amounts of arnica, safely.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, avoid taking arnica, and ask your doctor before using it on your skin. Talk to your doctor before taking any medication, including herbs.

  5. I’d never thought I’d see the day Anonymous plays dunce to quackery. Anyone remember CCHR’s campaign “Say No To Drugs”? This is in the same league.

    • Translated with Google Translator:

For ibuprofen, aspirin and diclofenac, recommend that physicians and your family (health professionals) one more proton pump inhibitors such as Omep (omeprazole) or ranitidine (Ranitidinnhydrochlorid). Both affect the glands from producing the acid. Omeprazole would destroy the glands and they would, however, re-form again. Ranitidine would only close the glands. However, both have the drawbacks due to the low acid levels that no magnesium or calcium (electrolytes) is so split and a huge deficit of electrolytes with cramps and pain Hyper developed accompanied. similar or identical to the porphyria. Under certain circumstances, as the heart is also a muscle as the stomach, intestines, etc., massive spasm of the heart and stop. Had December 2014 Fortunately I had magnesium from Diasporal (Stick), however, the a while needs to act. Due to the low acid levels may only slightly. The reason the intake of omeprazole was again an inflammation of the esophagus. Not too much coconut, etc. which increases the level of stomach acid !!! Needs taking omeprazole! Furthermore poisoned ibuprofen, etc. the liver!

  7. Absurd, try being in tears from pain and holy basil or whatever else you got posted there as if that’ll help. You all didn’t even bother to mention an ice pack. Anon is suck a pathetic joke.

  9. Yeah I’m not sure if I’d blindly trust Dr. Mercola. Oppositioner of vaccination, questioning whether HIV is the cause of AIDS, claiming cancer risks from radiation from mobile phones, food preparation claims that microwaves emit dangerous radiation and that microwaving food alters its chemistry (these claims are taken from his wiki-page)… Just these three claims are oppositioning basic and proven facts in my biology course. I’ve yet to see his provement of his claims…

However, the first three “natural ways to address pain” suggested by him are really a no-brainer once you realize what nutrients you require and what level of exercise you benefit from. Maybe that is the problem. In the industrialized society, it has become a “brainer” for individuals to realize what nutrients, the level of exercise and environment they require. Yeah I’d say the obesity epidemic and industry created from the demand suggests I’m on to something.
