As this monkey is being tied up and paraded around the streets, the onlooking crowd cheers.

Though monkeys might seem very foreign for those of us who don’t live near them, they are very common and known for being very comfortable around humans in India. One monkey in particular was charged with being a little too comfortable and was captured after six months of allegedly wreaking havoc on local businesses and passersby.

A professional monkey catcher was hired to catch this monkey and a few others once locals complained of their antics, but did he go too far in securing this monkey?

The monkey, a male macaque, was tightly bound by his arms, hands, and legs, and had a rope tied around his neck in a humiliating, stressful, and inhumane fashion. He sat outside on the ground looking solemn where anyone could approach him and was so stressed out that as one person patted his head, he hissed at them.

The monkey catcher claimed the binding was necessary because the macaque was being difficult and needed to be held down. Onlookers cheered when the animal was being tied up and afterwards when he was paraded around the streets before being put in his cage. When in his cage, he was untied and given grapes to eat.

Despite this cruel act against the monkey, the city of Mumbai plans on rehoming him in the countryside. “We will make sure it’s fit and when it is we will release him on the outskirts of Thane,” a state official from Mumbai’s Maharashtra Forest Department reported.

Although it’s unclear how long the monkey will remain caged for, it’s reassuring that he will be away from the humans who encouraged his bad treatment and valued their sale items more than a living being’s life.

  1. the is often a typical reaction from anonymous, an exaggeration, an over reaction. This monkey needed to be restrained, the people cheered the capture and restraint. The animal hissed because he was angry for being detained. later the monkeys were taken to the countryside and released into the wild, where they belong.

this was humane and anonymous you are guilty of the same dishonest sensationalism by mainstream media.

I don’t think anon readers are that stupid do you?

    • I totally agree with you wally. They did not torture the animal.

I hate it when people make a fuss on something they don’t understand and yet treat their own kind worse than those people treated that monkey.

    • There was a 3m croc that was treated/behaved the same way when captured (minus the head patting). I….don’t see any real issue with it. We don’t know how long he was tied for (the monkey) but he was released into a cage after capture (anyone who has worked with monkeys will tell you first that they are strong and dangerous- which makes me not like but understand the restraints).
As for the people cheering- if he was being a pest its a normal reaction for people to cheer.

I suppose they could have just killed him.

    • It was left in the street to be publicly humiliated, bound in an a way intended for human prisoners. The fuck was this necessary you fucking prick.

    • Thanks for being the one to say it. This was written by a fool; would they have preferred the monkey be put in a non-breatheable opaque box; while still being bound for safety? I really don’t think so.

    • Humane? How can human punishment be HUMANE on animals? Cheering when animal is punished? If such thing is OK by You, are you doing the same when it comes to your children? If you do let me know and I`ll come and cheer.

      • Do you have a monkeyfor a child? A monkey is aviciously strong Wild animal. Period. That’s the reason for the need to restrain it! It is NOT human. Stop trying to treat it like a human when it is a plain old soulless wild animal.

        • As someone who works with animals I can tel you they are NOT soulless they have feelings and any animal would hate to be tied up like that have some fucking compassion

    • The article is neither an exaggeration or an over reaction. We humans encroach on animals territory all of the time. We share the planet.

    • Wally, are you serious? Someone should tie you up in a crowd, and see how you like it. Its people with your thoughts and frankly the balls to post what you did, that make this world a shit place to live in. You should hang your head in shame

    • A fair comment Wally. If any of us were to be reincarnated as monkeys many would consider Mumbai a paradise on earth even when compared with western country where all animals are so well respected and cared for. True, in the case of creatures who provide us with fur, skin, milk, meat and eggs etc. there are notable exeptions and any monkey being scientifically tortured by way of contributing to our medical research or being caged and gawped at in some third rate zoo is unlikely to find life gratifying.
The need to make an example of some renegade primate for taking liberties with the properties of other Indians (upon whose good will the animals depend ) is regrettable and sad, neverthess for the sake of the future of both species, harmony must obviously be encouraged.

    • Wally: Thank you, what people lack most nowadays is common sense. They have all closed eyes and behave like they learned they have to. They doesn’t think for themselves anymore

    • This animal grew complacent and all too comfortable with humans. They should not have fed him, they should have scared the shit out of him to re-instill a proper fear of humans before the release. Not torture, not long term (say 24hrs), not physically injuring, but to prevent the animal from returning and quite likely being killed it NEEDED to learn fear of humans. I think it worked out well.

  2. Trussing up this sentient being sure looks like an abuse of power to me. Hopefully he will have enough habitat in his new location to avoid humans. I do acknowledge that many people in India are humane to others.

  3. I agree! I still don’t see what was so inhumane. They restrained him, they didn’t actually harm him, fed him and will eventually release him back in the wild. I know it has become somewhat of a trend to look for “politically incorrect” things in every situation that arises, but lets focus on more serious matters rather than that.

  4. How about the 150 billion animals that are eaten every year and suffer far worse!? WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE. WAKE THE FUCK UP. THIS ISNT A SMALL PROBLEM.

  5. A monkey is a monkey. You’d dare judge someone who’s trying to make a living while a wild animal causes destruction to the source of income? A monkey is a living creature. That’s all it is — a creature. It’ll never be anything more or less. Live with it.

  6. What’s the big deal? This doesn’t sound cruel and unusual to me. It’s not like they skinned him alive. It seems like they taught the monkey a lesson, and it will be more cautious around humans in the future. What’s the alternative? Let the bastard continue to roam freely, flinging poo and whatnot?

Let me tell you something, most people in India are vegetarian. Most of them wouldn’t kill a cow, pig, or even a chicken for meat (although some do). They are generally more respectful of animals than any American (the only reference point I have). So if they publicly humiliated a monkey it was for a good reason.

This article is blatantly one-sided because it doesn’t tell exactly what the monkey did. And YES, this IS ABSOLUTELY RELEVANT. Apparently it pissed a lot of people off. Use some common sense people.

  7. Sometimes I wish I was there, I would never have stood watching, I would have cut those ropes and run away with the monkey, though it actually depends on if this monkey had done anything wrong…

If this monkey had stolen or anything like that, then it deserves punishment, as another person would have. But I don’t think this is the right punishment for such a crime. :S

  8. Did anyone actually ask the monkey if he was uncomfortable. And what with you people saying its so terrible; humans are disgusting, then suggesting it should be done to other humans? Seriously, public humiliation is better than what America does to cats and dogs on the street. At least now he will stop fucking shit up. A human could have his hand chopped off. A monkey gets grapes. Seriously, your priorities here. . .

  9. Unlike humans animals do don’t have a voice!!!!! I am positive that the monkey has a reason for his actions as we do. i believe there were other choices available to the humans they obviously did not choose the right one. I do not agree with this in the least bit. humans seem to come up with any thing that will excuse their actions. we are the beasts in this world more so then any other creature.

  10. Exactly right, the monkey is an animal but it will have feelings just like humans, except humans enjoy inflicting pain on animals. I am flabbergasted by some of the comments on this page. There is people here who have no feelings towards this poor animal who is probably only trying to survive in the only way he knows how to. There is some countries like India who have no idea how to treat their animals and in that list I include China etc. You lot need to wake up and smell the disgusting way we treat our animal friends.

  11. the comments on this particular post have completely shattered my faith in humanity, the world should be ashamed of itself for what it has become.

  12. THE MONKEY CATCHER SHOULD BE CHARGED FOR ANIMAL CRUELTY. IT IS SO HEART BREAKING WATCHING AT THE SUFFERING OF THIS ANIMAL BEING PUNISHED. I AM WONDERING IF WILD ANIMALS ARE BEING PROTECTED IN THAT COUNTRY. WE NEED TOUGH LAWS FOR ANIMAL CRUELTY THAT APPLIES TO ANY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD.
