Anonymous Releases MAC_JELLY Malware, Infects Nvidia GPUs On Mac OS

3

A team of anonymous developers has released a new proof-of-concept malware program, MAC_JELLY, capable of infecting Mac OS equipped with an Nvidia Graphics Processor Unit (GPU). The group had earlier infected Nvidia GPU cards with WIN_JELLY malware on both the Windows and Linux platforms. WIN_JELLY acts as a Remote Access Tool allowing attackers to control a computer system via Internet.

MAC_JELLY is developed to demonstrate the vulnerability of Macs to the same type of malware. The developers plan to use the OpenCL, an open framework installed by default as part of OS X for writing code on multiple platforms, to write the Mac version of the exploit.

In 2013, researchers from Columbia University in New York and the Foundation for Research and Technology, Hellas in Greece warned that existing anti-malware tools were not designed to detect malicious code that’s stored in the memory of a separate hardware device like a graphics card and which is not executed on the system’s central processing unit.

The group recently published a proof-of-concept Linux keylogger, Demon, inspired by the 2013 academic paper. The group also released a rootkit for Linux systems, Jellyfish, which runs on GPUs.

Since the existing security tools aren’t designed to scan the random access memory used by GPUs for malware code, the anonymous developers are now working to create JellyScan, a tool that will let system administrators and security researchers identify GPU-based malware.

  1. Thanks guys. Now if you don’t mind… please free my machine. Excellent example of capability. Not so much one of control, of thy self, but an excellent example of no control.

I gots to make some money though(need my machine)… Haven’t got that many machines handy.

  2. So, I tought that anonymous was to help people. At least that’s why I’m with Anonymous and helping the community. BUT, why would you do shit like this? Why? It doesn’t help anyone by infesting computers. It doesn’t help. Please, stop with this bullshit.
