When you use a cash machine known as Automated Teller Machine (ATM), it is possible for someone with fraudulent intent to illegally copy your account details from the magnetic strip on your card. The person can then clone your card and use it later to withdraw money from your account. This is referred to as card skimming.

This crime has become a worry for many people. Around the world, card skimming is being committed by criminals with impunity. Many people have lost their money, and often have to challenge their bankers for a possible refund.

In this video we are showing you an ATM that has been targeted by criminals stealing people’s bank details and cloning their cards; exposed real-time thanks to a cyber security expert.

According to the Tech Worm, the cyber security expert named Benjamin Tedesco, was touring the capital Vienna, Austria, when he decided to test some of the ATMs around, to see if they were targeted by fraudsters.

He then approached one of the ATMs, and decided to test it. He gave the card reader a little pull. And lo and behold, the fake reader the criminals have put there, came out. The skimmer was designed exactly to look like the same card slot on the original machine. Not that shocked, as he suspected it, Tedesco calmly pulled off the skimmer and took some pictures of it while also video recording the incident. A lady who was there to also withdraw money from another machine saw what Tedesco had uncovered. She became afraid to use the ATM. Tedesco approached her and pulled the reader, but that one was original. He then encouraged the lady not to fear, as she can withdraw her money safely. The incident happened at the main Square of Vienna, near the metro station.

Tedesco said in the video that he plans to try reverse engineering once he reaches home. The Tech Worm reports that the pinhole camera that the criminals used to seize PIN codes, and a feature that allows the entire cards to be stolen in seconds, have been noticed by some Reddit users.

After watching the video, you do not need to be advised to check any ATM before using it. You can decide for yourself.  Taking a few seconds to pull the reader to ensure you do not become a victim to this crime will cost you nothing. Be vigilant everywhere you go, regarding your financial transactions. Beware and be careful.
