In 2013, Elon Musk envisioned a transportation system based on the Hyperloop concept; if successfully developed, the concept would change the transportation system, and give commuters a faster and safer way to travel.

His dream was to develop a high-speed intercity transporter, using a low pressure tube train. Once functional, the transporter will reach a top speed of 800 miles per hour (1,300 km/h), and will have a yearly capacity of 15 million passengers.

According to Musk, the Hyperloop system will be an alternative to the costly California High-Speed Rail, and will be more convenient and safer than other means of transportation.

In the beginning, the Hyperloop transportation system sounded like an impossible objective to accomplish; however, with the release of a new intro video earlier this month, it now appears Musk’s dream is on course to becoming a reality.

Commenting on the video, FossBytes said “If you were having any doubts, leave them behind as the Hyperloop is real. Hyperloop Technologies, the company which is making Elon Musk’s Hyperloop, has released the Hyperloop intro video, showing the plant where they are building this fifth mode of transportation.

In the video, engineers are seen working on the project. The project’s latest facility is located in the Arts District of Downtown Los Angeles, California, in the United States of America. The research, manufacturing, and testing of the system will be done in this 55,000 square foot area, while a nearby 2.5 acres facility will be used for larger hardware. More than 50 full-time employees are said to be working on various areas like engineering, design, legal, manufacturing and other roles.

Currently, the Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT), the company charged with building the project, is focusing on the Los Angeles to San Francisco route, which if completed will allow commuters to commute the 558.68Km journey within 30 minutes. The company is also considering other routes and hopes to expand further in the U.S., and eventually, the rest of the world.

The video comes as HTT appointed former Cisco top executive, Rob Lloyd, as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the company. Emily White, former chief operating officer at Snapchat, whose background includes both Facebook and Google, is also said to be joining as a strategic adviser and board observer.

Lloyd said in a blog post after his appointment, that he is more than committed to making the project a reality. He was quoted as saying, “After spending 10 years as an entrepreneur, followed by 20 years growing up in a small company called Cisco that became big and changed the world, I am fired up by the opportunity to change the world again.

The new CEO also said the Hyperloop mission is compelling and the most transformative mode of transportation the world has seen in decades. HTT is backed by a number of leading investors such as Formation 8, Sherpa Ventures, and Zhen Capital. The company is currently raising an amount of $80 million in a Series B round of funding.

It has been projected that Hyperloop will make a two-mile test track in California by the end of 2016/early 2017. Watch the first Hyperloop intro video here and tell us whether you still have doubts about the project.
