In Trump tradition, another international figurehead has taken offense to his remarks, this time about Paris.
French President Francois Hollande hit back at the president after Trump made comments about a friend saying “Paris is no longer Paris” since the spate of terrorist attacks.
Hollande reminded the US president to be respectful to American allies.
“There is terrorism and we must fight it together,” Hollande said during a visit at the Paris Agric fair on Saturday, according to Reuters. “I think that it is never good to show the smallest defiance toward an allied country. I wouldn’t do it with the United States and I’m urging the U.S. president not to do it with France.
“I won’t make comparisons but here, people don’t have access to guns,” the President Hollande added. “Here, you don’t have people with guns opening fire on the crowd simply for the satisfaction of causing drama and tragedy.”
Trump, in his Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) speech, compared border control regulations to those of Europe, blaming the European terror attacks on border controls.
“Take a look at what’s happening in Sweden. Take a look at what’s happening in Germany. Take a look at what’s happened in France. Take a look at Nice and Paris,” Trump said in his speech. “Take a look at what’s happening to our world, folks. And we have to be smart. We have to be smart. We can’t let it happen to us.”
The mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, and French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault both responded to Trump’s criticisms via Twitter on Friday.
