Susan Jordan, 69, principal of Indianapolis’s Amy Beverland Elementary School for 22 years, died saving the lives of her students on January 26, after a stationary school bus with 25 students suddenly lurched forward. The bus driver told Indianapolis Fire Department officials that Jordan pushed several kids out of harm’s way before being fatally hit. Two 10-year-old students who were struck alongside Jordan, are in the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

“Quite frankly, ladies and gentleman, we are talking about a legend. Just a phenomenal individual that truly cared about children. This is a tragic situation that we have. This loss is going to ripple across our district of 15,000 students,” Lawrence Township Schools Superintendent Shawn Smith said during a mournful news conference following the accident.

The school board released a statement praising Jordan and everything she gave to her community.

“Susan was an amazing educator. She had a remarkable way of making everyone she came in contact with feel valued and important. She had a passion for children that is unmatched. The entire Lawrence Township Community mourns her loss and extends our sympathy to the Amy Beverland Community the multitudes of people whose lives she touched.”

Last May, Amy Beverland students, faculty and staff recorded an 11-minute heartwarming video to tell Jordan how much they loved her. Hailed as heroic after her unfortunate death, Jordan is told how much she was truly admired:

Police said an initial investigation found no mechanical problems on the bus, and that the driver showed no visible signs of impairment. School officials said the bus driver has no history of moving violations or discipline issues, and described her as a model employee.
