Sofia, an eight-year-old girl who became terrified that Donald Trump would soon kick her out of her own country for being Muslim, found support from US service members after her mother, Melissa Chance Yassini, posted on Facebook about how Donald Trump’s bigoted rhetoric about Muslims (to deport Syrian immigrants from America as well as ban Muslims from immigrating to the country) affected Sofia.

The post quickly went viral, and it wasn’t long before Army veteran Kerri Peek saw it, and responded perfectly. She sent Sofia a picture of herself in her Army uniform. Included with the photo was a message that read: “Salamalakum Melissa! Please show this picture of me to your daughter. Tell her I am a mama too and as a soldier I will protect her from the bad guys. ”
Peek then asked her friends to post their photos in uniform with the hashtag #IWillProtectYou to assure Sofia that they would keep her safe.

The hashtag has since gone viral on Facebook and Twitter, with military service members and veterans pledging to protect not only Sofia but all Americans including frightened Muslims.

Yassini was shocked and delighted by the level of support she received from military members as well as commoners. She told Upworthy, “I have probably received close to 500 messages from various people in our military, from just people – Christians, atheists, Jews, every walk of life, every stage, have reached out to Sofia and I with overwhelming support and love. I read each and every message to her. And she now understands that we’re all part of a fabric which is America.”

I’m all for Immigration into the U.S. but This admin is going about it all wrong, But the scale of the influx of people, it is IMPOSSIBLE to properly vet and register all these people properly. I have a 13 yr old daughter and a 15 yr old son so I’m not heartless but I have to think of their safety as well. My Grandparent’s came from Germany and Ireland So but they did it the right way. I live in N.Y.C. so I’m multi-cultural, I don’t see race I see people but just like NYC their are bad apple’s in every culture but do it right. I’m a Patriot and I love my country and I will Die to defend it, I lost my brother in IRAQ Army Sgt 1st class Peter Hahn so I know about sacrifice, But we gotta be smarter about this. With all the problems and troubles that this country has, to know that people from all over the world still want to come here for freedom and the chance of a better life should tell you something. To refuse refuge to those people we are responsible for displacing from their own countries is a sure-fire way to make dedicated enemies of them. It is not only possible to register all of the refugees, but very easy to do so. This has been an ongoing fight since long before we were born. I can’t help, myself, to give links or tell you where to look because I’m in the first phase of approaching the V. A., and fully expect a harder fight to get what I was promised in the contract than I had doing my job with a fucked up back. However, it -should be- common knowledge that the 50 year limitation on secret documents and the other stipulations have revealed a great many blatant lies about our great nations’ actions. Notably that such views consistent with war have excessively been fought against freedom and any sense of morals or ethics. So when you claim a lost brother to a war and play on fear “for” your family, I would ask that you actually research before posting such a claim that enemies are coming in under the guise of refugees. And I don’t know what you were implying with, “us minions,” but if you’re going to take a stance, don’t suggest that you’re a comical drone while trying to invoke serious issues. Unless you’re implying that you’re also military. In that case, like I said, do some real research.

Not sure whether this little girl gets her news from watching CNN or Faux and friends. Maybe she just reads the Drudge Report.
