Do you also judge a book by its cover? The Middle East branch of Coca-Cola came out with a short film during the Islamic month of Ramadan to send a powerful message across: a world without labels is a world without differences.

The 3-minute video shows how Coke invited six strangers to an Iftar – the nightly fast-breaking meal during Ramadan – in the dark. The six Muslim men were tasked with introducing themselves to one another while the lights remained off. After each introduction, all of the other seated participants were asked to describe the appearance of the other person.  The guests conversed without forming prejudices about their fellow diners based on physical appearance. When everyone was done, they turned the lights on and shocked everyone.

The social experiment was conducted in conjunction with their no-label campaign. For the entire month of Ramadan, Coke cans in many parts of the Middle East – a region with over 200 nationalities and a larger number of labels dividing people – featured the brand’s white dynamic ribbon, but not its signature scripted logo. The backs of the cans included the anti-prejudice, pro-tolerance message: “Labels are for cans, not people.” coke2 “Fighting prejudice is an ongoing global battle, which Coca-Cola Middle East is proud to help combat this Ramadan by reminding the public that labels are for cans not for people. By urging everyone to remove stereotypes, we hope to spread happiness to the wider community,” said Islam El Dessouky, IMC manager, Coca-Cola Middle East.
