In a heartless display of cruelty, a dog owner deliberately poured cold water on his loyal pet and left the one-year-old canine to froze to death to the floor of her outside kennel on one of the chilliest nights of the year in the coldest city on Earth — a freezing –32°C in Yakutsk, just 280 miles south of the Arctic Circle in Siberia.
After concerned neighbors raised the alarm, animal rights activists reached the whimpering, shaking animal while she was still alive encased in ice. The heartbreaking 22-second clip below shows the frightened dog, frozen solid to the ground, pathetically waving and pleading for release with its only one free paw.
The rescuers managed to free the poor creature and rushed it to the vet. However, despite their efforts, the one-year old, who suffered hypothermia in –32°C temperatures, could not be saved. The vet gave it a lethal injection to end her agony.
A female volunteer told The Daily Mail:
“The eyes, I will never forget them. Did you ever see a man who wanted to live but who was already dying? The dog had exactly the same eyes, understanding everything, just unable to explain.”
The activists have demanded action against the owner, with a petition signed by 10,000 Russians. An animal rights activist told The Siberian Times:
“It’s one thing is when your dog dies, but this man has many children. Today he let his dog die next to his house, and tomorrow the same may happen to his children.”
Sergey Boyarsky, an MP in Moscow, has taken up the case calling for a prosecution of the unnamed owner. But it is unlikely the cruel dog owner will be prosecuted as there are no animal welfare laws in Russia addressing farm animals, companion animals, animals used in research, animals used for work, or animals used for recreation. The Independent reports:
“By international standards, Russia has limited animal welfare protections; although under the country’s penal code causing injury or death to an animal with malicious or mercenary motives or with sadistic methods, or in the presence of minors, is prohibited.”
