What is addiction? Psychology Today describes addiction as a condition manifested by compulsive substance use (such as alcohol and cocaine) or compulsive need for pleasurable activities (such as porn and shopping). The continuation of these activities changes the brain and leads to harmful consequences affecting work, relationships, health, learning, and motivation.

What is masturbation? Healthism describes masturbation as the stimulation of the sexual organs, usually by a person himself, to obtain an orgasm or to release sexual energy.

What are superpowers? There is no rigid definition of a superpower. Dictionary.com describes superpower as a power greater in scope or magnitude than that which is considered natural or has previously existed.

In the modern world, superpowers are described as near-Godlike abilities or superhuman traits (such as X-ray vision and the ability to cling to most surfaces) that create, control, manipulate, shape and reshape everything and anything. This is why you have the Batman and the Superman classified as superheroes, although they do not have any actual superpowers.

Is masturbation an addiction? Though science says it is a healthy practice, if someone masturbates more than three to seven times a week, it means they have an addiction which, among other issues, can cause infertility, undue anxiety, low self-esteem, and low-quality sleep.

Can abstinence from masturbation give you superpowers? Brohit, a Reddit user, claims he gave up self-pleasure for 700 days and reckons his abstinence from masturbation gave him ‘superpowers’.

Brohit, who started “NoFap” (an online community of 200,000+ strong men and women dedicated to abstaining from masturbation and pornography for periods of time), quit masturbating two-and-a-half-years ago and has gained immense control of his reality, going so far as to referring to it as gaining superpowers.

In a heartfelt post, Brohit explained how he gained metamorphic superpowers:

“We are all born with an empty void inside of ourselves. All our life we try to fill this void with something or the other. It can be anything – religion, spirituality, women, academics, work, porn, tinder, sex, mobile phone, TV, movies, and so on. How we fill this void makes us who we are. But this makes me wonder how can all these man-made, artificial things compose our personalities?

“Once I quit fapping, my mind did feel a lot clear and I was at peace more often. Yes I was able to feel all those things you call ‘superpowers’ too – sudden increase in confidence, laser sharp focus, more attention from women, easier to find sex, energy boosts, etc. However, I don’t like to refer to them as ‘superpowers’ – how do we know these superpowers aren’t just normal human tendencies?

“Maybe the constant glorification of sex and fine-ass honeys that we are exposed to daily has fogged our general perspective – now we can only think about sex and what it would be like to sleep with women that have ‘perfect’ bodies. But once we start controlling our sex urges, our mind realizes that there’s more to life and this world than just sex and hot women. If we can learn proper self-control, we can master anything.”

Brohit, who acknowledged being a ‘hypocrite’, argued there is no such thing as a healthy addiction:

“Ever since I started NoFap, Ive realized that I have way too many other addictions and obsessions. These addictions arent anything severe or serious. But the more I try to avoid them, the more my confidence is shaken apart. I check my phone every few minutes to see if that cute girl I texted has replied to my texts/ snaps.

“I go on tinder so frequently to see if I can find my one true soulmate (or maybe just get laid soon). Having meaningless sex with a new girl every time. Hows any of this different from masturbating? And if none of these things go according to how I want them to, my self-esteem and general level of happiness takes a serious blow.

“You guys might say that these are healthy addictions. But I dont want to agree to that. Theyre all meaningless attachments. I want to get rid of them because they bring nothing but misery to me in the long-run. They are nothing but mere blockages in my way to find my source of inherent confidence and true purpose.

“Recently Ive started pulling these out of my life one-by-one. I feel much more at peace. But I know that it takes one shitty day to get back to where I was before. At least now I can take comfort in the fact that if I can control my urge to jerk off then I have developed a strong enough will power to beat an addiction that people blindly dont even consider an addiction.”

The ability to quit porn and compulsive sexual habits, say its members, is a quick test of self-control, which helps treat porn addicts incapable to get aroused by real life sex, encourages youngsters to quit drugs, and gives confidence to newlyweds to look forward to having a healthy sexual outlook in their marriage.

  1. What you guys are experiencing is a move away from the ‘mind control’ of the Ego which dominates almost all of our waking moments.
You will find this easier to develop and understand if you adopt a formal meditation practice.
The Buddhists are the experts at this and can help with mindfulness practice and meditation technique.
In truth, all of life is an addiction to be overcome or transcended.
You can only realise this in the quiet of a peaceful mind. It takes effort and persistent but the results can bring immense joy and a priceless peace of mind.
    Good luck

  2. Don’t listen to him. Not using your gun for too long could result in rusting. Note that the article says more than 3ice/week is addiction. So do masturbate 3 times in a week & stay healthy stay happy.

    • “Jerkin the gherkin…” Eh Aakash Sharma? I completely agree with you!
I guess it reduces down to the age of the respondent; like, at 18 twice a day seemed reasonable, at 65 that would be a miracle.
I read somewhere, that 4 times a week was a reasonable target and such weekly activity went a long way in inhibiting prostate cancer.
Having lost a couple of good mates who died a painful death to that vile scourge, I’m therefore all in favour of the practice!
