Marijuana Produced by Pharmaceutical Corporation Fails Clinical Studies

Now that Marijuana legalization is coming, several big pharmaceutical corporations have jumped on the bandwagon hoping to stick it into some of their drugs. Unfortunately for one of them, British GW Pharmaceuticals, their attempts to create such an elixir has failed at the clinical trials. Their stock was crushed by about 21% in a week.

Designed for pain relief, the drug Sativex was found to have had little to no effect compared to the placebo when tested on patients during the recent trials.

“Although we missed the primary endpoint in this trial, based upon the positive data seen in the Phase II programme, we remain confident in the ability for Sativex to relieve cancer pain in this patient population,” GW Chief Executive, Justin Gover, said.

Sativex is already available in 27 different countries, not for pain relief, but as a spray used to treat multiple sclerosis.

Marijuana has a number of beneficial medical uses. However, it is very different from so-called conventional mainstream medicine, so big pharma have had a difficult time packaging this herb in the same way that they do with their other drugs.

GW Pharmaceuticals does appear to be a bit more honest and positive than some of the more unethical pharmaceutical corporations. However, many marijuana advocates are wary of pharmaceutical companies’ attempts at squeezing profit from this easily-grown herb.

In the video below, Justin Gover, CEO of GW Pharmaceuticals discusses his company’s history of making cannabinoid medications on Bloomberg Television program, “Taking Stock.”

  1. I am quite surprised.
Perhaps they need to look a little closer at the strain they are growing, or
perhaps their extraction process need to be revised.
It certainly does work, if you do it right.

    • No. Even if the Pharma companies say they are doing it for the patient, it’s not true. They are out for profit. They will do whatever it takes to get the people’s money; they will use the excuse that they are getting into “Helping people with their now favorite medicine that is also an illegal drug according to the government”; they will try to make bigger, denser buds with more THC% per volume, but it will not be the same as the natural stuff.. A farmer said it’s a big difference from natural cross-breeding than taking cells and altering..
