Milan R Vuckovic, a Berlin-based designer and data sleuth, has created an incredible time-lapse map that shows the location of every single terrorist attack, in which more than 20 people were killed, in the past 15 years, from 9/11 attack on Twin Towers and 13/11 attack on Paris. The video, titled 15 Years of Terror, ends with a message saying: “In the last 15 years no terrorist organization has achieved its final goal… let’s keep it that way”.
Vuckovic uses a series of basic shapes to denote fatality numbers, and when they appear on the map–much like the scar a real attack leaves on the population–they stay there. The map allows these clumps of data to show where attacks are happening most frequently, and clearly illustrates isolated events which have had a large world impact.
The data for the map came from the Global Terrorism database. “Due to the large amount of data used, there are likely to be mistakes (exact chronology, location, casualties etc). This video should serve as an approximation. (Especially in the messy parts.),” he notes in a comment beneath the video on YouTube.
Vuckovic told IBTimes UK, “I decided to create this video after I heard about the Paris and Lebanon attacks and after I read two essays: How Successful Is Terrorism?”(James M Lutz and Brenda J Lutz) and Why Terrorism Does Not Work (M Abrahms). We should educate potential future terrorists among us about how terrorism fails today and in the past to achieve its goals.”
