Actress Frieda Pinto Takes Oscars Leftovers to Feed Over 800 Hungry in Los Angeles

Around 3,000 plates of luxury food including rich short ribs, an entire octopus, chilled soups, Parmesan funnel cakes, chicken pot pie, golden baked potatoes with caviar, Oscar-shaped salmon, and gold-dusted popcorn were served up to guests, but large quantities of food were also left over.

While the western mainstream media was busy reporting on one of the biggest goof ups in the entire history of the Academy Awards, and busy obsessing with designer dresses donned by Hollywood actors that turned heads on the red carpet at the most glamorous night of the year, Indian media busily covered a less glamorous/scandalous part of the Oscars.

More than 800 hungry Los Angeles residents were served the luxury leftover food from all the Oscars weekend parties thanks to an initiative spearheaded by Indian actress Freida Pinto, female lead in Slumdog Millionaire (which won eight Oscars including best picture and best director in 2009).

Pinto teamed up with San Francisco-based non-profit organization Copia, and ensured the large quantities of leftover appetizers, desserts and salmon dishes from the 89th Academy Awards weekend parties did not go to waste.

The Governor’s Ball party was treated to an extravagant feast prepared by top chef Wolfgang Puck. As Salon reported, around 3,000 plates of luxury food including rich short ribs, an entire octopus, chilled soups, Parmesan funnel cakes, chicken pot pie, chocolate Oscar statuettes dusted with 24-karat gold, golden baked potatoes with caviar, Oscar-shaped salmon, and gold dusted-popcorn were served up to guests, but large quantities of food were also left over.

According to Salon, Puck (the official caterer for the Academy Awards Governor’s Ball), has teamed up with Chefs to End Hunger and has been distributing the unused prepared food from the Oscars official after party to restaurants and shelter homes for the past six years.

This year, their effort was reinforced when Pinto, a Global Citizen Ambassador, brought in Copia, which redistributed the hundreds of pounds of leftover food from all the Oscars weekend parties to a LGBT center, a few miles from the awards ceremony.

“Our aim is to ensure that no one goes hungry in our film and TV town of Los Angeles by recovering leftover food from all of our big parties and events,” Pinto told Vanity Fair in February.
