Barbaric: Pakistani Woman Burns Daughter to Death, says She has No Regrets

In a wave of violent brutalities against young women in Pakistan, a woman is reported to have set her own daughter ablaze for marrying a man the family did not approve of.

The barbaric act claimed the life of the young woman. The incident happened in the city of Lahore, the capital of Pakistan’s province of Punjab. On June 1, a similar incident happened in the same province in which a young woman was burned to death for rejecting a marriage proposal. The police have arrested four people in connection to that incident.

In this current incident, the police have arrested the mother and a brother of the deceased. According to the police, the woman identified as Perveen Bibi, tied her daughter named Zeenat to a bed, pouring petrol on her. She then set the young woman on her, with one of her sons helping their mother to tie Zeenat.

An anonymous neighbor in the area told the police that the family members even stopped neighbors from entering the house when Zeenat was screaming for help. As her daughter burned, it is said Mrs Bibi ran into the street shouting that she had killed the young lady for bringing shame on her family. The police later arrived and found the charred body near a staircase inside the house.

On May 29, it is said Zeenat married a man named Hassan Khan. Khan comes from the ethnic group known as Pashtun, while Zeenat is a Punjabi. The police said the family of Zeenat disapproved the union between the two because of their ethnic differences. But the two were very much in love, defying the family and tying the knot.

This is believed to have angered the family of Zeenat, especially her mother. Mr Khan told local media that he and Zeenat had been in love since their school days. He said Zeenat’s family had rejected several marriage proposals, forcing them to ignore the family last month and married.

After the marriage, Khan narrated what happened leading to the brutal death of Zeenat: “After living with me for four days following our marriage, her family contacted us and promised they would throw us a proper wedding party after eight days. Then we would be able live together. Zeenat was unwilling to go back to her home and told me that she would be killed by her family, but later agreed when one of her uncles guaranteed her safety. After two days, she called me and said that her family had gone back on their word and asked me to come to get her, but I told her to wait for the promised eight days. Then, she was killed.” Khan showed a document to the press confirming the marriage. Below is the document. Zeenat has since been buried.

The local police chief in the area confirmed that Mrs Bibi had confessed to killing her daughter with the help of her son Ahmar. He said the woman told the police that she had no regrets, and that her brutal act was a honor killing for the family. The police have since arrested her son as well.

Hundreds of women are killed every year in Pakistan, many by their own family members for violating the country’s conservative norms regarding love and marriage.

According to the independent Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, violence against women remains a big challenge for the government, as it is very rampant in the country.

The Commission’s latest report revealed that in 2015 alone, police formally investigated 76 cases of women being set on fire in various parts of the country.

Commenting on the damning report, the country’s Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif said: “The predominant causes of these killings in 2015 were domestic disputes, alleged illicit relations and exercising the right of choice in marriage.”

On the International Women’s Day in March this year, scores of women marched in the capital, Islamabad protesting against violence against women in the country.

I’m a Christian and I love people of different faiths but when you migrate to a western country please leave your barbaric traditions behind e.g: Killing other people for faith, discrimination of other people base on different views of believes and of course your stupid 14 century laws they have no place in the 21st century.

  3. just goes to show just how far we have let the world slip. sad, infuriating and just plain wrong… and to think this was done to maintain the families honor, pathetic and a disgrace to the human race you are…

  4. I do not think a zombie apocalypse will ever happen because we are too busy killing each other off. I am thinking nuclear winter is most likely now.
