Jerad Gale, 31, a police officer from Champaign, Illinois, was arrested on June 23 for strangling and raping two women. On March 30, he was named ‘2014 Officer of the Year’. Arrest warrants were issued in two separate counties. Gale’s bonds in each county were ordered at $250,000.

The charges he faces in Champaign County include aggravated criminal sexual assault, criminal sexual assault, and aggravated domestic battery against a 23-year-old woman in November, 2013. In Piatt County, Gale has been charged with a single count of criminal sexual assault against a 27-year-old woman in July, 2012. The two victims, Gale’s ex-girlfriends, were University of Illinois students at the time of the separate incidents.

State police investigators also located a third woman, who detailed to them Gale’s unusual sexual activity during their relationship from 2003 to 2008. Because the activity fell outside of the statute of limitations, she cannot file criminal charges. However, information provided by her can be used as propensity evidence against Gale to establish that he has a tendency to engage in a certain kind of behavior.

If convicted of the charges against the 23-year-old Champaign woman, he could spend up to 30 years in jail. If convicted of the charges against the 27-year-old Piatt woman, he could spend up to 15 years in jail. He is currently staying in Piatt County Jail and was set to appear in court on July 13.

Gale is the fifth ‘Officer of the Year’ who has been arrested in 2015 for heinous crimes. McKinney police officer Eric Casebolt, who brutalized and pulled his official gun on teenagers at a pool party in June, was named ‘Officer of the Year’ in 2008. Houston police officer Noe Juarez, was indicted in April, after he was caught running drugs and selling guns for the Los Zetas cartel in Mexico. He was named ‘2009 Officer of the Year’.

In February, Edwin Guzman was arrested for molesting a young girl who thought of him as a “father figure.” He was named ‘2012 Officer of the Year’. The same month, Jonathan Bleiweiss admitted to forcing 20 male immigrants into having sex with him. He pleaded guilty to an array of charges including 14 counts of armed false imprisonment, 15 counts of battery and four counts of stalking. He was named ‘2013 Officer of the Year’.
