Chickens At The Nation’s Largest Poultry Producer Will No Longer Be Fed Human Antibiotics

0

Tyson Foods, the largest poultry producer in the U.S, recently announced that by 2017, they will completely cease feeding its chickens human antibiotics. It appears that the growing trend of corporations succumbing to the demands of both activist and the consumers themselves is still going strong. Recently, consumer voices have successfully made Chipotle remove GMOs from their food, and have driven industry giant Pepsi to discontinue its use of aspartame.

Many chicken producers and retailers such as Costco, have already issued similar statements; now Tyson Foods, the leading supplier of McDonalds, is also following suit. The demand for change has been ignited since an increased number of people have become aware of the content of their food. Ultimately, people are concerned about their health and how eating chickens drugged with human antibiotics is affecting their resistance to antibiotics.

Although this statement hints at positive change, it should be noted that the company does not intend to discontinue feeding its chickens antibiotics, they will just no longer use variations of the drug intended for human consumption.

NPR reports:

“Tyson still will use a class of antibiotics called ionophores that are not used to treat humans. If bacteria develop resistance to ionophores, doctors don’t care, because they never use ionophores anyway.”

Horrifyingly, this practice was considered normal within the industry. Unfortunately, this is unsurprising considering the countless inhumane methods which are being used to produce large quantities of physically and mentally unhealthy birds for profit. This viral video reveals the secrets of the industry, and informs you of everything you need to know about that piece of chicken on your plate.

In the video, Craig Watts, a contract farmer for Perdue, highlights the fact that he is bound by contract to ensure the chickens are not provided with any form of natural sunlight or fresh air. As a result, the chickens are confined to a small space which cannot be regularly cleaned; meaning the chickens continuously live and sleep on a bed of their own, and often that of previous batches’, feces, bodily fluids, limbs and other disgusting excrement. This thick layer continuously rubs on the underbellies of the birds, causing their feathers to wear off and expose sore flesh.

It is therefore unsurprising that roughly 97% of all chicken products are contaminated with harmful bacteria. Surly this is enough to suggest that the poultry corporations should drastically change the grotesque and disturbing environment these birds are inhumanly confined to, instead of trying to cure the diseases which have been triggered by their own cruel methods.
