Death Of Freddie Gray: All Six Officers Involved Have Been Officially Indicted To Face The Law

1

The death of Freddie Gray, in Baltimore, resulted in many directing their anger and agitation toward the officers involved. People from across the country bound together and demanded that the officers responsible for the young mans untimely death, be brought to justice. b

The grand jury, has finally indicted all six officers-Garrett Miller, Sgt. Alicia White, Edward Nero, Caesar Goodson Jr., Lt. Brian Rice and William Porter, to face the law for their conduct in the death of Freddie.

Baltimore City State’s Attorney, Marilyn Mosby, told reporters “the Grand Jury, who also concluded there is sufficient evidence for probable cause, returned indictments on all counts presented to them”. She also announced that reckless endangerment was added to the charges against the officers and the charges of false imprisonment were removed, as initially considered.

The charges vary for each individual, but include several counts of manslaughter, second degree assault, misconduct in office, and reckless endangerment, among others. The most serious charge listed is second degree depraved heart murder, which only one officer faces.

The officers, however, remain free on bail and their appearance in court will mark the beginning of one of the most controversial cases in the history of the city.

But despite the latest indictment, people are still protesting around the Fraternal Order of Police headquarters. Independent observers have said it will be difficult to say whether this indictment will lead to better community relations with police, because the community is still in shock over of the death of Freddie.

On April 12, 2015, Freddie Carlos Gray, a 25-year-old African-American man, was arrested by the Baltimore Police Department for possessing, what the police alleged was, an illegal switchblade. While being transported in a police van, Freddie fell into a coma and was taken to a trauma center. Freddie died on April 19, 2015. His death was ascribed to injuries to his spinal cord.

The circumstances of the injuries were initially unclear, but eyewitness accounts and images suggested that the officers involved used unnecessary force against Freddie while arresting him, resulting in their current indictment.
