Racist Social Media Post

Another cop has been outed as a racist, thanks to social media. This time, “part-time” police officer, identified as Melissa Adamson, was fired from her job as an officer at the McKeesport Pennsylvania Police Department. An old social media post surfaced showing Adamson posing in a mirror with the caption “I’m the law today, n*gga.” The Internet was abound with outrage and demands for her firing, which the city obliged.

“As Mayor of McKeesport, I feel compelled to publicly address an issue that has come to my attention via social media. A past social media post surfaced a few hours ago involving a recently hired part-time police officer, who has been training as a probationary employee for just a few weeks. This post displays a degree of conduct and character that is far different from what I would expect from an officer in this city,” stated Mayor Michael Cherpko. “It is absolutely unacceptable. Without hesitation, my office and the police chief’s office immediately concluded that this officer’s actions will not be tolerated in the City of McKeesport. She has been relieved of her duties, and her employment has been terminated.”

The Mayor’s reaction is to be expected. Racism has no place in law enforcement or a civilized society. For those that defended Adamson as using the more familiar and less racist phrasing of the word, this shows a blatant disregard for any level of cultural sensitivity. “Everyone that knows me knows I don’t have a racist bone in my body. And people who don’t know me, I can understand why it was misconstrued to where it looks racist, but like I said everyone who knows me knows I’m not racist.” Adamson told the press. Adamson may claim not to be a racist, but posting this type of inflammatory, self-promoting content shows a distinct lack of judgment and foresight in an era when every police action is scrutinized.

Police work revolves around ego and making sure the public bows down to your every whim. This post by a rookie officer clearly exemplifies this. Unfortunately, the current police screening process encourages ego – failing to adequately prevent this type of thing. Another question the public should be asking is: why was this former officer employed by three different police agencies at the same time? Adamson was working simultaneously for the McKeesport Police, the Pitcairn Police, and the Versailles Police Departments. This is highly unusual and typically looked down upon by hiring agencies.

Adamson was fired from her job at McKeesport PD but was allowed to resign from the other agencies who employed her. This has almost become standard procedure when police are accused of misconduct. Officer Adamson, being allowed to resign, sends the public a clear message that the law enforcement looks out for their own. By allowing officers to resign, it leaves the door wide open for them to be hired in other nearby agencies. Fortunately for the world, Officer Adamson will never work in law enforcement again. After drawing attention to her lack of judgment via a social media frenzy, she is far too toxic to ever be a cop again.
