Iowa Police Find Meth Lab Inside Taco Bell Restaurant

The Cedar Rapids police department has arrested Christopher Adam Matous, 31, and Kent Jerome Duby, 56, from inside a Taco Bell restaurant in eastern Iowa after the remnants of a methamphetamine lab were found in a utility area.

Matous faces charges of conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of sodium hydroxide and petroleum distillates. Two of those charges are felonies. Duby faces a charge of conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine, a felony.

Greg Buelow, the public safety spokesman of Cedar Rapids, said the investigation first began in the wee hours on August 4. Although the restaurant was closed at the time, police encountered two men outside the building – one of whom was a Taco Bell employee. Police then called the restaurant manager to the scene, who opened the restaurant for the officers. Inside, cops found meth lab remnants; they are yet to determine if the meth was made inside the Taco Bell or if it was brought to the eatery from outside.

“The employee has been terminated and our franchisee is considering pressing criminal charges. The restaurant will reopen after it has been sanitized and inspected by the Health Department,” Taco Bell said in a statement.

According to Eater, this is the third drug related arrest at a fast food chain in recent history. In 2014, a McDonald’s employee was charged with selling heroin by placing it in Happy Meal boxes ordered in the drive thru. In April 2015, a Burger King employee was charged with selling meth through the drive thru and consuming the drug at work.
