Kevin O’Leary says 3.5 billion people living in poverty is ‘fantastic news’

36

Last year, Oxfam released a frightful statistic on global wealth inequality and rising poverty. The wealth of the world’s 85 richest people is now equal to that of the world’s poorest 3.5 billion people. While most of us would consider this to be a very sad reality, Kevin O’Leary thinks otherwise.

The Canadian venture capitalist, in an episode of The Lang and O’Leary Exchange, gave an illuminating demonstration of how obscene wealth can cause an empathy deficit.

This is fantastic news and of course I applaud it,” he proclaims to his open-mouthed co-host Amanda Lang. When she protests that an African living on a dollar a day wouldn’t share his opinion, O’Leary simply argues that Oxfam’s data should inspire the world’s poorest people to be the next Bill Gates.

He further adds: “It’s a celebratory stat, I’m very excited about it”. He then continued to state, “if you work hard, you might get stinking rich”.

What the world needs is people like Bill Gates, who pledge huge amounts of their money to charity and undertake developmental activities, instead of just another “one-percenter” blabbering nonsense.

  1. If he thinks that is is great then he should lose it….Right along with the rest of the top 1% that do nothing for the less fortunate with their wealth.

    • Its called working smart and hard ,you will not build wealth working for someone else your entire life.there are many ways to build wealth analyze the markets, economies ,trends and its not hard to innovate.Kevin o Leary has great advice on making money and whining is not one of those ways liberate your mind.

      • You are a disgrace to humanity just like this guy is. How are the billions of people that dont have access to computers going to ‘analyse markets, economies and trends’ when they dont even have access to staple foods, clean water, education and/or books. When all they are trying to do is survive and this guy expects them to get motivation from a statistic? Surely you arent that mentally challenged to see that it is simply a stupid thing to say. Especially when the only way these 85 people can stay wealthy is by having a large amount of poor people, so that they can benefit from corruption, cheap resource extraction, cheap labour, poor health and safety, amongst other things. I strongly suggest you try and liberate YOUR mind from the oppressive mentally that you have and realise that having, for example, 0.5 billion compared to 10 billion will not increase your happiness by any margin. Nevertheless, that difference in money could benefit and increase the happiness of billions of people exponentially. From a purely subjective point of view now i really believe you are pathetic, even if you are just trying to troll people to make your insignificant life seem anymore significant.

        • They already rigged the game,…hard work my ass,…anyone who’d date to go about and start with a good idea there are tons of these “hard-working stinking rich vultures” which will deprive you of any opportunities you may think you have….

99.9% of the times, only money makes money!

      • Shame youre not that successful. Keep trying. Even if you dont make it you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you`re not one of the world`s totally useless cnts.

      • No, it’s called being born with privilege. The 1% didn’t get there by working hard and pulling themselves up by their poverty ridden bootstraps ( and before you roll out an exception that proves this rule, remember why those people are considered exceptional for exactly that reason: It’s super unusual and Extremely unlikely). They got there by being born and raised there.

      • Liberate your mind huh?….
So 3.5 billion people are whining about their situation and have no one to blame but themselves.
And you expect them to come to the realization that we can all become wealthy if we stop working for the man and work smarter not harder.
I sincerely ask you to never reproduce.
This world does NOT need the kind of mindset of self centered and selfishness that enables humans to ignore real life problems like poverty.

      • Or otherwise exploiting the planet and its inhabitants, walking over people to the top, and screwing everyone over in the process.

As the saying goes, “if you ain’t cheating, you ain’t trying”. Go spread that “working smart and hard” bullshit somewhere else. I know plenty who work hard and smart, and while they get by and aren’t in poverty, they’re not filthy stinkin rich. A good amount of luck and callousness is needed to get filthy stinkin rich.

  2. Bill Gates owns a large stake in monsanto I wouldnt call him a saint. Kevin O’Leary got rich by selling a worthless internet company which collapsed during the tech bubble. This man is a prick

  3. when the revolution comes, he needs to be shipped off to Africa and left there so he can “teach” them how to be successful.

    • We’re never going to do anything or be anything unless we stop letting these people have a hold over us. I submit to you, internet goers, that we enact some real solutions. If we’ve forgotten there are 3.5 BILLION people on OUR side… and 85 on theirs. Who is going to win the struggle? A group of 85 people with mountains of green paper or a massive rebellion of 3.5 BILLION men and women with a combined goal to not take any more shit? Understand that there isn’t anything that these people can do accept make us fear them and they’ve done it ENOUGH as it is. It’s all a matter of shrugging off the apathetic attitudes and inherit the earth that is literally being killed and mined and sanctioned off just so that the 85 people can get BIGGER PILES OF GREEN PAPER!

  4. Why he have to give his money away to the poor child? Kevin has earned his money, unlike others! If you suddenly are rich, will you give your money away?I don’t think so…

By the way, all americans are fat and stupid.

    Regards: Your worst enemy

  5. ANONYMOUS WE NEED ANOTHER NOVEMBER 5th to show these people what we as a collective people can do we need to pull this dying world out of the gutter and into the light no matter what it takes we must dawn our masks and fight for what guy faux stood for and make things the way they should be!!!!!! And I’m not talking about just in the UK or America but in al of the first world countries who are not doing anything to help the others on this dying planet

  6. Very sad how people can brainwash them self after long period of expensive life style’s. take Gaddafi and Romanian Dictator’s Nicolae and Elena, they all had good motives for the people but by the end the greed poisoned there minds and well….. you can see how that ended.

    • As a romanian i can tell you that Ceausescu wanted the good for his country. At the moment of his death Romania had 0 debt to any other country. The last years of his life he just cut the costs and exported almost everything the country produced just to get to that point. Everyone had jobs, everyone had money but they didn’t have the liberty to spend them. The americans and other nations didn’t like the idea of Romania being financially independent and organized that revolution in which Ceausescu and his wife were trialed and sentenced to death in a week. The romanians didn’t know the truth about why they were living like that in the 80’s , with so many restrictions and they just followed the persons organizing the revolution in ’89. After 1990 when the “democracy” came, Romanian government sold everything to big international companies, especially americans and stoped building any new factory (they built only malls). Now Romania is again in a huge debt and the pigs rulling the country keep selling whatever is left. If Ceausescu was living, by 2000, Romania was in the place of Germany with the economy. Please anonymous, release the truth about the ’89 revolution in Romania.

  7. What an asshole. I bet if he were one of the poor his tune would change real quick. He has no idea what being poor is really like.

  8. If you want to make money, entrust it to Kevin O’Leary, he will never lose it; he is a very shrewd and diligent investor.
If you think pledging and not actually going through with a pledge is not dishonest and just poppy talk then follow this guy.
If you think your wealth is God given and is a test from God to see how you use that wealth by having empathy for the next person and actually doing something to alleviate some of the misery in this world then don’t follow this guy; he has no empathy and contributes daily to the misery in this world.

  9. This guy is a jerk. But the average american making 30k a year (with no savings or property) has more annual wealth than 535 of the world’s poorest and most of us — I’m not excluding myself — do hardly anything to help.

  10. This guy is a complete idiot and like the rest of them has no real idea or clue as to the total lack of opportunity poverty bring. No poor person can even imagine who Bill Gates is let alone have access to the tools and education needed. Not even a westerner can do it. Moron with no brain.
Why do these morons keep getting the money.

  11. I’m not going to agree with what he said, I’m also going to say that the reporter needs to get her stories straight and needs to be less emotionally invested in a broadcast. She is talking to a man who grew up in the first-world, trying to tell him about how “working hard” just doesn’t work in third-world countries. He is speaking from his experiences, however his experiences don’t involve many if any poor. So in taking that, his experiences are telling him that if you work hard, look up at the giants above you, it makes you thrive. The reported is looking at it from the perspective of how little opportunities there are in the third-world countries and how what he’s saying will never happen. She see’s how the giants stomp out the small guys the second they seem like a threat. People have to remember the different perspectives and wordings may not be exactly as portrayed or intended. I by no means agree with Kevin, but as i said earlier, the reporter needs to think her position on the argument.

  12. Did you say we need more people like Bill Gates? Check your temperature – you have a fever or worse – your brain has stopped working – unless your a cabal shill. Whoever ‘undercover economist’ is, she/he’s not qualified to write things publicly – why not ask Dick Cheney to author some propaganda or you. It would fit right in with this one.

  13. Born into poverty… Malnourished… brain doesn’t develop properly… Will never amount to much except have children born in poverty. Repeat.

  14. Someone please sue the government itself!!! This is possible to do so…
And the best thing they cannot use what they taught you or teach you against you in the court cause that would be an evidence they created and remember you are fighting them, that evidendce itself… That evidence itself is one of the point you are suing government againt… Do it some one!!! GO HUMANITY!!!

  15. If he really thinks that way, he should give up all is money to charity and start all over again and see if he makes it to the top!!
