A concerned parent in the U.S. State of Oklahoma, has told the Free Thought Project that her 4-year-old son told her that his teacher forced him to stop using his left hand to write in class because it is evil.
The boy, identified as Zayde, is said to have been born naturally left-handed in the city of Okemah. Before even starting at the city’s public school, the young boy had been using his left hand for all of his needs.
His mother, Alisha Sands, said she noticed that her son was using his right hand while doing his homework. Naturally curious about the change, she asked him if his teachers had said anything about his hands. After raising his left hand, Zayde strangely responded, “This one is bad.”
Pressing the boy for further details, the boy confessed that his teacher had told him never to use his left hand because that hand stands for the devil.
“From picking things up to throwing things, to batting, to writing, to just coloring you’d do at home with him, he’s always, always used his left hand. It breaks my heart for him because someone actually believes that, believes my child is evil because he is left-handed, it’s crazy,” Alisha, who is also said to be left-handed, told local media.
Alisha said she could not fully believe her son, so she sent a letter to the pre-K teacher at Oakes Elementary School demanding the veracity of the story.
However, she received a strange response that included an article regarding hand dominance. In the article, Dr. Donna D’Alessandro explained, “In many western cultures, right-handedness was/is considered the ‘correct’ or ‘right’ hand to use, and left-handedness was unlucky, inauspicious or frankly evil. The word ‘sinister,’ meaning left-sided, derives from various sources as early as the 15th century. There are numerous instances of left-handedness being associated with wickedness. For example, the devil is often portrayed as left-handed, and people throw salt over their left shoulder to ward off the evil spirits that dwell there.”
According to Alisha, she took the article to the school and filed an official complaint with the school’s superintendent. However, no disciplinary action was taken against the teacher for discouraging the boy in that manner.
Due to the fact the young boy’s confidence in his hand is gone, Alisha has admitted that she is currently looking for another school in the city for her son to attend. In addition, she is also forwarding another complaint to the Oklahoma Board of Education, for the sake of other children who may get a similar response from the teacher.
“There was no suspension of any kind. There was basically nothing done to this teacher. She told them she thought I needed literature on it. I don’t feel like the school did what they were supposed to for him,” Alisha added bitterly.
