The Simpsons predicted Trump presidency a Disaster, “warning to America”

Over the years, the Simpsons have entertained us with mad plots, side-splitting dark humor, and hmmm, doughnuts. But the reality isn’t so hilarious when you watch their March 19th 2000, episode, where Bart dreams of Lisa cleaning up after a disastrous Trump presidency, once she has been elected to office.

The Guardian has reported Dan Greaney, the writer of this episode, as saying that it was meant to be a “warning to America.” The possibility of Trump for president, said Greaney, was “just seemed like the logical last stop before hitting bottom. It was pitched because it was consistent with the vision of America going insane.”

Bart’s vision, as the episode plays out, follows Trump’s journey; Bart is the lower-class beer-drinking father’s son, while Lisa makes it to office.

“As you know, we’ve inherited quite a budget crunch from President Trump,” Lisa tells her advisers from the Oval Office desk. “How bad is it? The country is broke? How can it be?”

But Greaney offers his perspective in a positive, glass-half-full kind of way to The Hollywood Reporter. “The important thing is that Lisa comes into the presidency when America is on the ropes and that is the condition left by the Trump presidency. What we needed was for Lisa to have problems that were beyond her fixing, that everything went as bad as it possibly could, and that’s why we had Trump be president before her,” Greaney says.

“The Simpsons has always kind of embraced the over the top side of American culture … and [Trump] is just the fulfillment of that.”
