Tunisia Terror Attack: Tale of Two Heroes Who Used Their Body As Human Shield

British tourists, who survived the massacre at Sousse in Tunisia on June 27, have come out in defence of the Tunisians on the beach, and have revealed how local heroes formed a human shield to protect tourists from gunman Seifeddine Rezgui, who, after massacring 38 European tourists at the Riu Imperial Marhaba Hotel, headed towards the neighbouring Palm Marina hotel to claim more victims.

John told MirrorOnline, “It’s amazing what they did. The staff were in a line and they were shouting at him, saying ‘we won’t let you through’. They shouted: ‘You’ll have to go through us’. That’s why he’s got his back turned to them.”

John’s wife told The Independent the hotel staff faced Rezgui and told him they were Muslims. “They’d actually made a human barricade – ‘you’re not going to get past us, you’ll have to kill us’. Everyone seems to think ‘it’s the Muslims, it’s the Muslims’, but it is not, it is not their way. There are no words to express how grateful we are to them.” anon wear t-shirt

Ibrahim el Ghoul, an 18-year-old paragliding instructor, put his life on the line to protect the tourists. “He raised the gun and aimed at me. He didn’t see I was an Arab. I gathered the four people close to me and turned my back towards him and shouted Allahu Akbar, very loud. When he heard Allahu Akbar he lowered his gun and went on walking along the beach. Then I decided to go after him. So I took a jetski and caught up to where he was. I picked up rocks and was throwing them at him, anything I could. I was about seven metres behind him. I was saying bad words in Arabic at him. But he just kept smiling. He walked about five metres and stopped, turned around and said: ‘I am not here to kill you. Turn around and go home’. That was the last thing I heard from him,” he said.

If locals acted selflessly to protect foreign visitors, 30-year-old Mathew James used his body as a human shield to protect his fiancée Saera Wilson from being killed; he was shot in the shoulder, chest and hip during the rampage.

“When I heard the first shot I reacted without thinking. I remember grabbing Saera, turning her around and falling on top of her. That’s when I was shot. It didn’t hurt at first. It was a strange feeling and I said to Saera ‘Jesus, I have been shot’. I put my hand down on my stomach and that’s when I could feel all the pain and I could see the blood all over my turquoise Lacoste T-shirt. I was angry and panicking. I was lying facing Saera under the sunbed. I said, ‘babe, babe, I’m going to die’. That’s when I told her to tell the kids I loved them and that she had to get away for them. I didn’t want her to go but I knew they needed to have one parent at least,” he recalled.
