Worldwide Protests in Response to Trump’s Inauguration

Protests erupted across the nation and the globe in response to Trump’s inauguration amid scattered, low-key celebrations. Trump’s favorability rating is now down to 32% as he takes office as the least popular president in at least a generation, according to Democracy Now.

Celebrities and protestors gathered before the inauguration outside Trump International Hotel in New York, included among which were filmmaker and activist Michael Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Cher, Julianne Moore, Robert De Niro, Alec Baldwin, and many others, all calling for citizens to kick-off 100-days of resistance. After impersonating Trump and taking a few humorous jabs at him, Alec Baldwin made the following statement:

Donald Trump and Steve Bannon and Mike Pence and all these people that are a part of Trump’s administration think you’re going to lay down. The one thing they don’t realize is New Yorkers never lay down. I’m a parent. Our children are never too young to know what’s going on and to teach them what a real American is. And real Americans want full transparency of their government.”

During the inauguration, bridges across England, Ireland, Scotland, and Germany were occupied by demonstrators with “build bridges not walls” banners, and protestors in the Philippines burned American flags. A protester from a local women’s rights group in Manila stated the following:

It’s horrible to think that an alleged sexual predator, a racist, sexist and evident xenophobe will take over the most powerful country in the world.”

Citizens in Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East are concerned Trump will guide the U.S. on a more isolationist and protectionist path, leaving many to wonder where that leaves the rest of the world. In a statement from Ian Kearns, co-founder of the London-based European Leadership Network:

If he [Trump] follows through – and people have to come to terms with the fact he may well do what he says he’s going to do – then it’s the end of the post-World War II, post-Cold War order and the beginning of a new phase.”

Amid reports of celebrations in Russia, an irritable China tightened their media coverage of the inauguration, the French Left-leaning newspaper, the Liberation, proclaimed “Here we go!” accompanied by an effigy of Trump leaning into a stiff headwind, and the Vatican began to pray, according to the Baltimore Sun. Professor at the University of Edinburgh, Briton Nicola Frith, stated the following of Trump’s inauguration address:

It’s the most nationalistic address I’ve heard since… I don’t know when. It’s like Donald Trump has just flooded the whole nation with his personality.”

It’s been said that were there an apocalypse of some sort, like for example an impending WMD attack, citizens would have a few main psychological reactions: Those who go into hysterics, cry, and look for an escape; those who freeze, or lay down and give up; and those who are driven to fight on and survive. Sounds eerily familiar, doesn’t it?

But hey, to brighten your spirits, we thought we’d leave you with this hilarious photo Getty Images took of the Clintons as they arrived at the inauguration. Nearly as funny as the seething look on Hillary’s face, is Bill, who appears as though he reverted to a 4-year-old about to die of boredom:
