Murder by Cop: The year in review

8

Written by: Justin King at theantimedia.org

Everybody knows the names Eric Garner, Mike Brown, and John Crawford. Those names are now etched in the collective memories of the US and will remain there for quite some time. Three incidents hardly shows a pattern of police brutality and corruption. What else has happened recently that might have contributed to a complete disregard for anyone wearing a badge?

In January of this year, the Fullerton cops that beat a mentally ill homeless man to death because he was sitting in the wrong area  walked out of a courtroom as free men. You can watch the video and listen to Kelly Thomas beg for his life as cops beat him into a coma below.

In February, a cop shot and killed a high school student because he answered the door holding a video game remote. The cop was there to serve a minor violation of probation warrant on someone else in the home. Previously the officer opened fire on another unarmed person, but missed. It is clear at this point that holding anything in your hands is grounds for the police to murder you.

In March, cops killed a homeless man for “illegally camping.” While he was attempting to surrender, he was shot repeatedly, hit with a grenade, attacked by a K-9, and then shot with a bean bag while he bled to death in the dirt. An officer announced his intentions to shoot the man two hours before the first shot was fired. He is retiring with full benefits. The video is available here.

In April, cops gunned down the victim of a serious assault after he tried to get away from his assailant to the “safety” of the police. The cops had established an “entry team” near the door and announced their presence. The entry team was obviously untrained and announcing your presence before making a dynamic entry in a hostage situation is quite literally against every rule in the book.

In May, cops in Habersham Georgia tossed a concussion grenade through a window into a crib and blew a hole in the child who wound up in a coma. They were serving a petty drug warrant. Of course, the person they were looking for didn’t even live there. The department then refused to pay for the medical bills for the child they maimed.

Also in May, cops beat a man with a flashlight and tazed him because he was disoriented in an apartment complex. He was asking for help and he wound up dying.

In September, a man who was carrying a decorative sword was killed by Utah cops after they say he attacked them. Of course later, surveillance footage from local businesses was released that showed the man “running for his life.” He was shot in the back. The shooting was predictably ruled as a “justified shoot” and the killers never faced trial.

In November, charges were tossed out against an officer who killed a 7-year-old girl while she was sleeping during a botched raid. The fatal shot was fired by a cop who was blinded by a grenade that had been thrown by another officer. Since he couldn’t see, the only responsible thing to do was to start firing. Surprisingly, the cops didn’t claim they were in fear for their life, nor did they plant a weapon on the 7-year-old. The killer was charged, but then the charges were dropped.

Also in November, Salt Lake City cops were cleared in the shooting of an unarmed man outside a gas station. The local media played a wonderful part in clearing the killers by repeatedly pointing out that the man was above the .08 blood alcohol level for driving, which doesn’t really matter since he wasn’t in a car. They also attempted to paint him as suicidal. It should be noted that cops in Utah kill more people than drug dealers or gang members.

Also in November, an NYPD cop shot and killed an unarmed man in a stairway because… well he was there with his children.  There has still been no reason given for the murder. The case is on its way to the grand jury, and we know how that will turn out.

Just a few days ago in Arizona, cops killed another unarmed man because… well, why not? It’s not like they have ever had to explain their actions.

The worst part about this list is that it is nowhere near complete. Police kill someone every single day in this country. Sometimes it is justified, sometimes it is clearly not justified, and sometimes the only thing the public has is the word of the officers involved, which has become notoriously unreliable. In the same timeframe, cops killed more Americans than died in the Iraq war. An American is more likely to be killed while unarmed by a cop than to be killed by the dreaded ISIS terrorist group. If 9/11 is discounted, murder by cop is more likely than being killed by all terrorist groups combined. In the last 15 years, more than 25% of people killed by the NYPD were unarmed.

It should be noted that the number of cops shot and killed last year was 33. That’s the lowest rate of officer “death by gunfire” in over 100 years. There are also exponentially more officers patrolling the streets of Police State USA. Being a cop is not a statistically dangerous job. It isn’t even in the top ten of dangerous jobs. Your local pizza delivery driver has a higher chance of being killed on duty than a cop.

This is an epidemic that the US government will not address. After all, it’s better to have a population that lives in fear than one that will exercise their rights. With a government that encourages officers to act like the Gestapo, is there any real surprise that protests and riots are breaking out all over the country?

Author’s note: Not all months are listed in order to have room to profile multiple cases in the same month.

Russia Made A Big Deal With Turkey – To The Great Displeasure of US & Europe

5

The European Union are working hard with the United States to avoid any further partnership with the Russian Federation. Under new projects, such as the Third Energy Package, to accelerate investments within the EU regarding the supply of gas, the Russians have had their South Stream project abandoned this month out of potential conflict to the Nabucco line. Both lines would see an increase in gas supply running from Turkey through the Black Sea to Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, Slovenia and Austria.

The Nabucco line[1], backed by the EU and the United States displays the concern of a Russian supply of natural gas gaining even more strength in the region. They argue that such a stronghold by one country is in non-compliance with the EU competition, even though the outcomes of the new energy infrastructure are to “enhance cross-border trade.”

Up until now, the Russian Federation is the largest exporter of oil (32.5%) and natural gas (38.7%) [2] to the EU. The Nabucco line would see Iraq as the main provider of gas, with the backing of the United States. Considering that Serbia is one of the countries where the South Stream project would have had a gas line running through it, is not at all surprising that the EU and the US have attempted to halt the South Stream project.

Despite this, Turkey has signed a sequence of new trade and energy deals with Russia, extending their already lucrative deal for gas provisions this month. [3] Currently, Russian President Vladimir Putin, is dealing with Western sanctions; one wonders the reactions of the US in light of these recent agreements. Will the Western front retaliate?

It is also interesting to discover this situation drawing a very coincidental parallel to the movie Shadow Recruit, according to Watchman’s report. The report, narrated by the owner highlights the complete flip of the situation where rather than Russia’s economy collapses, the US and European economy may face a similar fate. [4] One commentator makes a valid point in light of the new agreement that will see Turkey’s neutrality in the event of a potential war in the region; with the newly built Wartime Headquarters, as Watchman states, he may not be far wrong.

Undercover Cop Outted by Oakland Protesters, Points Gun at Crowd

OAKLAND, CA- A Wednesday night protest in Berkeley ended after an undercover California Highway Patrol cop  pulled a gun on attendees. Earlier in the evening, between 100 and 200 protesters gathered to continue protests that started last week over the lack of indictments in the police murders of Michael Brown and Eric Garner.

The protest started on the University of California Berkeley campus and participants marched to Wheeler Hall, where businessman Peter Thiel was giving a talk–coincidentally on the effectiveness of the nation-wide protests. Protesters were not allowed in the auditorium but eventually forced their way in.

By the time the crowd thinned out to between 30 and 50 people, the protest had made its way to Oakland. It was there that demonstrators discovered two undercover cops, who were dressed as civilians and wearing bandanas over their faces.

Protesters began yelling

“Hey, they’re undercover, they’re cops!”

A protester and Berkeley resident who identified himself only as “Dylan” reported that he pulled a bandana off of an officer’s face:

“I’m a white man, and I pulled off (the officer’s) mask, but they punched a black man…He got arrested.”

According to KTVU News,

“The two policemen started to walk away, but the protesters persisted, screaming at the two undercover cops. One of the officers pushed a protester aside. The man responded by pushing back and then the officer tackled him to the ground, handcuffing him.

The crowd, incensed, began to gather around them. The second officer pulled out his gun and pointed it at the crowd. More officers quickly arrived and dispersed the crowd.”

A Reuters photographer captured the officer pointing his gunStorify reported that the officer also pointed his gun at the camera.

Oakland police reported in a press conference that the undercover officers were California Highway Patrol (CHP).

Police are claiming that an officer was assaulted, which allegedly prompted the arrest and drawing of a gun. After the incident, more officers converged on the scene.

The mostly peaceful protest did see several protesters throwing rocks as businesses, one of which shattered the glass of a T-Mobile store. A Chase bank was also targeted and according to the City of Oakland, looting was reported in a small business area in downtown. Storify posted screen shots of tweets alleging the cops had been banging on store fronts before they were outed.

Nightly demonstrations have turned violent in the San Francisco Bay area, where police tear gassed, pepper sprayed and beat protesters and where other demonstrators shut down freeways.

The CHP is no stranger to police brutality and controversy. An officer recently resigned after beating a woman on the side of the road during a traffic stop. They arrested 150 police brutality protesters who blocked a highwayon Monday night.

Wednesday’s protest was organized by the activist group, By Any Means Necessary, which aims to see “killer cops” jailed and charges against protesters dropped. More details are expected to emerge.

Wisconsin Town Asking Residents to Voluntarily Have Home Searched for Guns

4

Written by: SM Gibson at theantimedia.org

A town in Wisconsin is asking local residents for a favor. The citizens of Beloit, a town located 75 miles southwest of Milwaukee, are being asked to voluntarily give up rights granted to them by the Constitution.

In an effort to ‘get people thinking differently about guns’, Police Chief Norm Jacobs of the Beloit Police Department is asking locals to grant the police department access to their homes so they may search for firearms.

Jacobs admits that he doesn’t believe the citizens of Beloit will be knocking down his door to have their property searched and seized, but states that he hopes this campaign will get younger people to think of gun violence like Ebola. The chief says that he wants local residents to think of home inspections like vaccines that will assist in building up his community’s immune system.”Gun violence is as serious as the Ebola virus is being represented in the media, and we should fight it using the tools that we’ve learned from our health providers,” Chief Jacobs said.

Police claim that their request will allow them to locate guns that the homeowner didn’t know they had in their possession. Jacobs even stated that he believes there is a chance they will discover firearms linked to crimes.

“That’s really what we’re looking for,” the Chief said. “Maybe we’ll find a toy gun that’s been altered by a youngster in the house — and we know the tragedies that can occur there on occasion.”

Maybe in the future, instead of coming up with a plan to search for modified Nerf weapons or developing a campaign that compares knives to leprosy, the Chief of Beloit can perform his sworn duty to protect the rights of his neighbors instead of looking for ways to violate them.

2015 NDAA Gives Native American Land to Foreign Mining Corporation

7

Written by: SM Gibson at theantimedia.org

WASHINGTON, D.C.- This week, the Senate will vote to strip Native Americans of ancestral land, giving it instead to a foreign mining corporation.

The action is buried in the 2015 National Defense Authorization Act, which in recent years has come under fire not only for consistently approving billions of dollars for war, but for authorizing the indefinite detention of American citizens without trial. It passed in the House earlier this year.

This year’s version added a provision that grants 2,400 acres of Apache land in the Tonto National Forest in Arizona to Rio Tinto, an Australian-English company. Apache medicinal, ceremonial, and burial grounds will be given to Resolution Copper, a subsidiary of Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton. Rio Tinto has been criticized by the right for sharing an African uranium mine with Iran, but the land grab is even more damning.

The transfer of the Apache land passed independently in the House once in 2011, but twice last year did not garner enough support. It was opposed by both Democrats and Republicans following intense lobbying by Rio Tinto for nearly a decade.

The 2015 National Defense Authorization Act, sponsored this year by Carl Levin and Howard P. Buck McKeon, contained the heist. It was slipped in by John McCain and buried on page 1,105.

Terry Rambler, the chairman of the San Carlos Apache tribe, said of the heartbreaking news:

“Since time immemorial people have gone there. That’s part of our ancestral homeland…We’ve had dancers in that area forever — sunrise dancers — and coming-of-age ceremonies for our young girls that become women. They’ll seal that off. They’ll seal us off from the acorn grounds, and the medicinal plants in the area, and our prayer areas.”

In a show of cold “compassion,” the stolen land stops short of an area called Apache Leap. It was a summit where trapped Apaches jumped to their deaths rather than face the wrath of settlers and U.S. troops in the 19th century. Even Apache Leap, though it technically remains in control of the federal government (along with an area of oak trees), can be drilled if Rio Tinto gets permission within a 30 or 90 day wait period.

The government justifies the transfer because it stands to gain land in exchange for the Apache ancestral acres. It also claims that jobs and economic development make the “deal” worth it. Rio Tinto says it will generate $61 billion and 3700 direct and indirect jobs over 40 years, though the numbers are disputed.

Regardless, one of the main concerns with the deal is the effect drilling will have on the ecosystem. Rio Tinto uses “block cave” mining, which digs for ore but causes the land above it to crack, subside, and even collapse. The mountains that will be affected currently distribute rain water and snow to the people who live on the land. Rambler said

“It seems like us Apaches and other Indians care more about what this type of action does to the environment and the effects it leaves behind for us, while others tend to think more about today and the promise of jobs, but not necessarily what our creator God gave to us.”

This year’s NDAA also includes other questionable federal land dealsthat put the environment at risk.

Clearly, slipping the Apache land robbery into the NDAA was a successful attempt to push it through without scrutiny. When scrutiny was applied, the measure failed. Twice. But the NDAA invariably passes every year, even following outrage over the government and president’s declaration that it can imprison whoever it wants, when it wants, for as long as it wants.

It is no secret that the NDAA has nothing to do with “defense” and everything to do with perpetuating America’s military empire and the government’s dominion over its citizens. The addition of the Apache land transfer only further proves the inherent sham of entrusting government to keep citizens “safe.”
