Approved Food, an online shop in Britain, sells ‘expired’ food to bargain hunters who are “all about value for money”; they save up to £60 on weekly groceries. Dan Cluderay, owner of Approved Food, has become a millionaire by selling food items that have lived past their ‘time’ according to supermarkets.
There is a difference between a sell-by date (used by supermarkets for their own internal purposes), a best-before date (which relates to quality, not food safety), and a use-by date (which needs to be taken into consideration for meat, fish, and other potentially harmful fresh produce). Here is Cluderay’s list of ten foods you can eat past their best before date, without worrying about their taste or effects on your stomach.
Fruit and Vegetables which aren’t moldy or rotten will taste great, regardless of what the packet tells you.
Chocolate is preserved by sugar, and it lasts a lot longer than supermarkets would have us believe.
Condiments such as Ketchup will last up to a year as long as they are kept in a refrigerator.
If it doesn’t smell and hasn’t curdled, Milk is perfectly fine to drink.
If the egg sinks in a pan of water, it’s safe. If it floats, it is rotten!
Rice and pulses can last for years, so you can pretty much ignore the expiry date.
Potato Chips are preserved by salt and it lasts a lot longer.
Bread, as long as it’s not moldy, can always be transformed through heating.
Hard Cheese is fine to eat, as long as any mold found growing on it is not ingested.
Yogurt can last up to six weeks. You can scrape the mould off the top and eat what’s underneath.
If it is a canned food, if the can isn’t leaking or bulging – it is still edible. If it leaking – throw it away. If it is bulging, handle it with rubber gloves, bury it deep away from a water source.
Living in a middle class family sometimes pays off; and you learn most of this cuz you can barely afford to waste food 🙂
