Recently it was reported that even though over 1,500 IRS employees were caught cheating on their taxes, many of them got promotions! That’s right, instead of being shown the proverbial door, they are still working for the organization whose most important job is to ensure proper tax collection.
Russell George, Treasury Inspector General for the Tax Administration, said, “Given its critical role in federal tax administration, the IRS must ensure that its employees comply with the tax law in order to maintain the public’s confidence. Willful violation of the law by IRS employees should not be taken lightly.” George assured the public in a statement this week that there will be consequences for the employees that were caught using their positions to avoid taxes.
In a statement, the IRS was reported saying that while the employees will be subject to strong disciplinarian measures, they will not be fired. “The IRS is committed to ensuring that employees meet their tax compliance responsibilities. Nonetheless, the IRS agrees that we can improve this process,” the statement read.
The report pointed out that over a ten year period there were 1,580 employees who were purposefully not paying their taxes and another 18,300 who weren’t paying by accident. In response to the recent findings, Sen. Orrin Hatch, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, said, “It is crucial that IRS employees are held to the same standards as the hardworking taxpayers that pay their salaries. That means filing their taxes and paying the taxes they owe to the government.”
