The Iowa caucus is just weeks away, and the results of a CNN/ORC poll (in the critical first state in the nation to vote) shows that Bernie Sanders has an 8% lead over Hilary Clinton. Sanders polls at 51% among democrats, while Clinton polled at only 43%. Former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley trailed the two at 4%.

In December, Clinton had the lead in the Hawkeye State in CNN/ORC’s poll- she led by 18% .

Donald Trump polled at 37% among Republicans, while Ted Cruz got second place with 26%.

Marco Rubio was third with 14%, and Dr Ben Carson polled at 6%.

While a win at the Feb 1 2016 Iowa Caucuses will not necessarily win the party’s nomination, Barack Obama, Al Gore, George W. Bush and Bob Dole all won in Iowa before being picked to represent their parties in the general election.

Sander’s economic policies were key to Democratic caucus-goers’ choice. On the economy, 22% more place their trust in  him over Clinton. 67% said that they believed he would help the middle class, while only 30% believe that to be true for Clinton.

Clinton was believed to be more knowledgeable in terms of foreign policy, leading by 40%, and more believed that she would win the general election.

Republicans seem split between Trump (27%), Rubio (26%) and Cruz (25%) when it comes to foreign policy.

On who best represented Republican values, 29% choose Cruz, 28% went with Trump and 15% chose Rubio.
