Nathaniel Stocks, a 5-year-old boy from California, took a field trip to a San Bernardino County fire station with his elementary schoolmates to learn fire safety lessons, including “stop, drop and roll” exit drills, and when to call 911, on November 5. Just two days later, he put his new knowledge into action and saved his sleeping grandmother, Kimberly Ratliff, from a house fire.

On November 7, when Nathaniel woke up coughing at 1 am, he found smoke filling his room. Instead of panicking, he dropped to the ground and crawled beneath the smoke to his grandmother’s room and woke her up.
When fire crews reached the home, they were able to bring the fire under control within 15 minutes. The two, along with grandma’s Chihuahua, were rescued before the home was destroyed. No one was injured.
Ratliff told CBSLA she got up to find huge flames inside the home. “I think he saved our lives for sure. I have no doubt I was sound asleep,” she said. “I don’t think it was a coincidence. I think it was a God thing,” said Nathaniel’s mother Brianna Stocks.
Nathaniel was given a badge of honour, allowed to wear a fireman’s uniform and sit in a fire truck after his heroics on Saturday.
On November 9, he was honored by the fire department:
