Stelarc, the original inventor of the idea in 1966, and several efforts later, has finally placed together a medical team willing to aid him. The medical team inserted a scaffold underneath the skin of his left arm. Soon after, they noticed tissue, blood and vessels starting to grow around it.
The main focus of the idea behind this project, in accordance to him, is to grow an ear and the keep the ‘artificial’ ear online all the time. He states “If I am not in a Wi-Fi hotpsot or I switch off my home modem, then perhaps I’ll be offline, but the idea actually is to try to keep the ear online all the time.”
The ear itself is actually a part of the professors left arm. The ear has its own blood supply as well. The professor wishes to make the ear more realistic and start development on inserting an earlobe that will be attached to the ear. After that task is completed, he will then move onto attaching a small microphone, in which will be able to connect to the Internet wirelessly. This ear will act as a remote listening device for people in another location. He will also be able to follow any conversation, no matter where the professor is.
Professor Sterlac, is the head of the Alternate Anatomies Laboratory inside Curtin University, and was asked about the privacy issues. His response is that he aims to keep the microphone on 24/7, this would allow his audience to be connected to his ear.
As his research grows, people from all over the globe are providing different reactions. Several people are bemused and even curious about the new device, other normal’ people find this insane. However, one thing is clear, the experiment is making a lot of heads turn.
