A leading Chinese government mouthpiece, the state-run Global Times has warned of a potential military conflict over heightened US surveillance in the South China Sea. Global Times said, “If the United States’ bottom line is that China has to halt its activities, then a US-China war is inevitable in the South China Sea. We do not want a military conflict with the United States, but if it were to come, we have to accept it.”
A US P-8A anti-submarine and maritime surveillance aircraft recently flew over waters off China’s Nansha Islands for reconnaissance activities. As retaliation, China electronically jammed Global Hawk long-range surveillance drones spying on China’s Nansha Islands.
“The reconnaissance conducted by the US military aircraft poses a potential threat to the security of China’s maritime features, and is highly likely to cause miscalculation, or even untoward maritime and aerial incidents,” Hong Lei, a spokesman for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told reporters.
Hua Chunying, a spokesman for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said China had lodged a complaint and that it opposed “provocative behaviour” by the United States. “We urge the US to correct its error, remain rational and stop all irresponsible words and deeds. Freedom of navigation and over flight by no means mean that foreign countries’ warships and military aircraft can ignore the legitimate rights of other countries as well as the safety of aviation and navigation,” she said.
China’s official stand might escalate the tension over disputed islands in the South China Sea and elsewhere in the Pacific, where the United States is determined to protect the interests of allies like Taiwan, Vietnam, Japan and the Philippines. China claims most of the South China Sea, through which $5 trillion in ship-borne trade passes every year. Taiwan, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Brunei have overlapping claims.
Beijing is building two lighthouses on reefs in the Spratly Islands, claimed by an array of countries. According to satellite images released by IHS Jane’s Defence Weekly, China is also building a concrete runway almost 10,000ft long capable of receiving military fighter jets and surveillance planes on a disputed archipelago – Fiery Cross Reef – in the South China Sea.
Admiral Harry Harris Junior, the commander of the US Pacific Fleet in the Pacific, recently warned that Beijing was seeking to tighten its grip on the region through an “unprecedented land reclamation” project in places such as the Spratly. China responded by accusing him of “fear mongering for the sake of fear”.
“Neither party wants a war if it can be avoided, but there are red lines for both sides. I worry whether Beijing considers the US to be a declining power and assumes that Washington will back down if it shoots down a US observation aircraft,” feared Robert Dujarric, director of the Institute of Contemporary Asian Studies at the Japan campus of Temple University.
Well, the US has just been explicitly warned not to fly over China or risk the consequences…

China and Russia have been building up for the next confrontation to see who will rule the world for the next few generations. What people need to realize that every country’s governments have been hijacked by a cabal with global interests. Russia and China not to be excluded. They play nations and expend human resources as if it were a game of chess. America is not this great bastion of peace or freedom. IMO China and Russia are worse. No one wants to see World War III, but it has already begun. This is China’s attempt to build defenses to try and halt American Fleets from reaching the Chinese mainland from the Pacific. They stand a better chance if they only have to deal with an attack from Europe and the Middle east, another reason why America invaded middle eastern countries. Too many people are unaware of the build up leading to this conflict. This is not news to me, I knew this was coming since 2008.
