It’s “harder to get into most nightclubs than it is to get into the Green Area,” a final security checkpoint. Submariner William McNeilly alleges, and has told WikiLeaks recently. The 25 year old is trying to grab the attention of the world, to warn us of the risks surrounding the Trident nuclear weapons system.
“This is bigger than me, it’s bigger than all of us. We are so close to a nuclear disaster it is shocking, and yet everybody is accepting the risk to the public.”
McNeilly is a “Trident” nuclear weapons submariner for the UK Royal Navy turned whistleblower. In his submission – a lengthy report- to WikiLeaks, he outlines the safety concerns and problems around the Trident system, a UK nuclear deterrent based in Faslane Scotland. You can download the PDF document from the WikiLeaks link above, which highlights the security issues that are potentially exposing us to a nuclear disaster waiting to happen.
“I raised my concerns about the safety and security of the weapon system through the chain of command on multiple occasions. My concern couldn’t have been any clearer. Multiple times I complained to people of various ranks about being able to walk straight down to the Missile Compartment with a bag on my back which wasn’t checked. With the only security being lazy security guards that don’t check IDs properly.”
McNeilly was reported as being on the run in late May since the posting of the online report outlining his concerns. If caught, McNeilly can expect to face a lengthy detention in jail. Though amongst the claims on WikiLeaks, he emphasizes he is hopeful of a pardon. “Prosecuting someone for alerting the people and the Government to a major threat isn’t a good image for someone who serves the people.”
The report comes at a time when the SNP – the third largest party at Westminster – has announced their concerns for the renewal of Trident. Angus Robertson, an MP of the SNP has said “These revelations, if true, are extremely concerning. It reads as a nightmare catalogue of serious safety breaches.”
Given that McNeilly has warned us that this is the perfect opportunity to send nuclear warheads “crashing down on the UK,” the weapons engineer who served from January to April this year, has since, been dishonorably discharged from the Royal Navy. He returned to Belfast in June after running out of resources to live on the run, moving country to country in Europe, almost on a daily basis. He was arrested and detained by military police, but Commanders have said his breaches were not in contrary to the Official Secrets Act. As of this week, it was also announced that McNeilly would not face court martial or any further punishment.
