There are many science-fiction (sci-fi) technologies that have been shown in movies and books. The authors of these fictional pieces, base their assumptions on future advancements of science and technology, hoping that their predictions will become a reality one day.

In fact, some of these fictional inventions have already become a reality. And those that are not yet real, are currently under development. In order for us to grasp the amount of sci-fi technologies that have become a reality, the Telegraph has compiled a list.

Star Wars Episode VI was released in 1983. In the movie, Princess Leia sent a holographic message that said: “Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, you’re my only hope.” This was sci-fi at the time. But now, the Polish Marcin Panek has created Leia Display Systems, which is capable of transmitting holograms across the world.

The Transporter is another technology that was depicted as sci-fi. The Transporter was a teleportation machine  that was used in the Star Trek universe. It converts a person or an object into an energy pattern called dematerialization. In trying to build this device, some German engineers created a prototype, nicknaming it “Scotty”. However, the real life transporter is made up of two 3D printers. The way the machine works is relatively simple: An object is put into one of the 3D printers—where it is destroyed—and a second 3D printer recreates it.

In the 1989 film Back to the Future II, we were exposed to a number of fictional inventions. One of the predictions, was the hoverboard that replaced Marty’s skateboard in the film. In 2015, the Japanese automaker, Lexus unveiled a prototype for a real rideable hoverboard.

Tom Cruise was seen predicting crime in the 2002 movie, Minority Report. Although the world is not yet at the stage where law enforcement officials can predict crime, there is something close to it. Predictive policing experiments are underway in the United States, the United Kingdom and China. It is just a matter of years before we make this a reality.

The movie Total Recall predicted a self-driving car. Certainly, we know how Google’s self-driving cars are now beginning to flood the streets of the United States. As of February 23, 2016, public road testing of driverless cars is legal in California, Michigan, Florida, Nevada, Arizona, North Dakota, Tennessee, and the District of Columbia.

In the movie Terminator, Arnold Schwarzenegger was portrayed as a very complex robot. The sci-fi movie has been studied by the United States-based Robotics Company, Boston Dynamics. It is said the company has built robots that are similar to those seen in the movie. Several prototypes of the robots are believed to have been given to the United States military’s robotics research branch.

In the animated film Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-class (WALL-E), the last robot left on Earth spends his days tidying up the planet, one piece of garbage at a time. For up to 700 years, WALL-E developed a unique personality. This movie has become a reality in Volvo’s drone guided Roar robot, which collects rubbish and keeps the environment clean for us.

The replicants in Blade Runner are almost identical to humans, and can only be detected through the fictional Voight-Kampff emotional test. The True Companion sex robot (pictured on the right) might not be as realistic or emotionally advanced, but it’s one step closer to a robot-human union.

In the 1965 movie Thunderball, James Bond (Sean Connery) uses Q’s Jetpack to escape from two gunmen after killing Jacques Bouvar, Spectre Agent number 6. In 2008, the Martin Aircraft Company of New Zealand created the Martin Jetpack, which uses a gasoline engine with two ducted fans to provide lift. Its design claims a 60 mph maximum speed, a 5,000ft flight ceiling, and a flight time of about 30 minutes on a full fuel tank.

The 2014 Oscar-winner Her, sees Joaquin Phoenix interact with a next generation personal assistant that has natural language interaction, and learns what its user likes. Apple, Microsoft and Facebook are all advancing their personal assistants using artificial intelligence, in an attempt to perfect the voice-controlled software.

Over the coming years, more and more sci-fi technology is going to become a reality. Therefore, do not be surprised when the entire concept of sci-fi technology no longer exists.
