Anyone keeping an eye on the constant argument and debate between Oracle & Google, will not be surprised to hear that Google is examining options to replace Java as its supported primary code for the Android operating system.
The web is currently full of reports stating that Google happens to be researching the possibility of switching their code to Swift. Swift is known as a language that is being used by Apple. It was created to substitute Objective C. However, Swift gained popularity a lot quicker than its predecessor because of its capability to trim down the long codes – thus making it more coder friendly and more organized when compared to other languages. Considering the fact that Swift is open source, Google isn’t the only company that has prying eyes on Swift; Uber and Facebook are also considering shifting to Swift.
So, with that said, the question arises: with the adaptation of Swift, what would Android look like? Well, it is going to look like a beautiful Catholic marriage, but with a lot of compromises. For starters, Android will need to establish a runtime for Swift in order to enhance their further development. The complete basic library and APIs would be modified and made Swift-ready, and the SDKs would likewise require the added support.
If that is not enough, then both the base level APIs (a number of which are using C++) would need to be rewritten. In essence, Google will have to remodel every single Java related thing they have – that is, if they want to make Swift the sole code for Android.
However, since that would be a very big step, the tech giant is not planning to completely switch over. Instead, it aims to make future Android operating systems more Swift based. Other fascinated organizations, such as Uber & Facebook, are waiting to see what Google comes up with before they introduce Swift on their platforms.
If you are a developer who likes to work with Swift, or you have basic knowledge of Swift, then please share your thoughts on this development. Do you think Google should make Android more Swift based, or should they keep Java as the primary code for Android?
