It seems Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and seven of his cronies might soon be facing jail-time. If they ever made the mistake of setting foot on Spanish soil, anyway. This is because a Spanish high court judge has drawn up arrest warrants in a case brought up by Spanish citizens.
The other alleged criminals include former foreign minister Avigdor Liberman; current and former defense ministers Moshe Ya’alon and Ehud Barak, respectively; former interior minister Eli Yishai; former intelligence minister Dan Meridor; and minster-without-portfolio Bennie Begin.
These seven men make up the “Forum of Seven”, a committee of ministers who aided Netnyahu in key decisions over security issues. They are feeling just a little bit uneasy, it would seem…
“We consider it [the judge’s order] to be a provocation. We are working with the Spanish authorities to get it canceled. We hope it will be over soon,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nachshon said Saturday night.
The Spanish accusation of war crimes stem not from the obvious recent case of Israel destroying hundreds of women and children, but from its actions in a 2010 incident.
On May the 31st 2010, the Gaza Freedom Flotilla, which consists of ships from 37 different countries, was boarded by Israeli forces.
The Flotilla’s purpose was to peacefully break an Israeli blockade of Gaza. Refusing to accede to Israeli requests that they berth at the Ashdod Port, they were soon boarded by Israeli commandos. Less experienced passengers had expected to be blocked, and did not believe that the Israelis would forcefully take control of the boats.
Spanish witnesses were present on the Mavi Marmara, a ship crewed by the iHH (a Turkish NGO), where ten activists were slaughtered. Though Israel suggests that these activists were armed with pipes and knives, with kitchen knives being found from the ship’s kitchen at the scene (duh).
From the UN’s account, passengers resisted Israeli attempts to board, using water hoses and by throwing items at them. As Israel soldiers repelled down from helicopters, two were detained, disarmed, and their weapons thrown overboard. None of the passengers had live firearms, which contrasted greatly with Israeli accounts that they were fired upon.
Israeli forces soon used live ammunition, killing four outright and “continued shooting at passengers who had already been wounded, with live ammunition, soft baton charges (beanbags) and plastic bullets”.
“The majority of gunshot wounds received by passengers were to their upper torsos in the head, thorax, abdomen and back“. In essence, the UN found that the Israelis had fired upon the activists with express intention to lethally wound and kill them, even shooting those who were fleeing or lying faced down on the ground.
One activist was executed via close-range impact of a bean-bag round to his head. The round entered his brain.
A photographer who was taking photos of the incident was also killed.
This is not the first time courts have issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and his ilk; England had to amend laws to make it difficult for individual judges to issue arrest warrants without state approval in order to prevent the arrest of several Israeli officials.
It is unknown whether this latest call for the arrest of Netanyahu will be respected by Interpol or Spanish law enforcement.
