History and Recap of V Day
V Day means several thing to different countries. To star-crossed lovers, it’s Valentine’s Day. To Women’s Rights activists it’s a global movement to end violence against women and girls. To Japan, it stands for humiliation and rubbing salt in its wounds, having lost a World War and all that. To Germany, the same thing but because they killed a large number of Jews rather than Chinese, and because of cultural differences/ lack of an American nuclear attack, they have come to accept it as a just penance of a sort.
To China and Russia, V Day represents their victory over a fascist regime and an imperialistic military dictatorship after suffering millions of deaths to their hands, a legitimate form of nationalistic propaganda. Although justified, one can understand that the former-aggressors of that war had lost many of their own people as well, and do not like being reminded again and again and again and again of those events…
V Day is also an excuse to show-off a whole lot of new military hardware (and a veiled threat to other powers that they have the military to combat any second attempt at conquering them)[said powers are probably also afraid that this show of might is intended to demonstrate Russia and China’s intention of conquering them].
Russia’s V Day parade was boycotted by the US and Europe, claiming that it was because of Russia’s involvement in Ukraine. A fair excuse, though don’t get me started on the level of propaganda the mainstream media has had to deploy to demonize a country which was essentially doing far less than the US would have done to protect its own interests… I digress.
Interestingly, the recent V Day in China was also… Unofficially boycotted by much of the West, with only Russia’s, South Korea’s and some 28 smaller nations’ heads of state represented. Seems to me like these guys had no intention of attending parades held by either Russia or China for some reason- good excuses to claim the moral high-ground while avoiding these things are few and far-in-between and they jumped on Ukraine. Cue the Western mainstream media crying about something horrible about the Chinese parade.
Political Tensions
South Korea, it seems, has chosen sides… after all, the US was pressuring its president not to attend… Not because China was its rival, nooo, but apparently because Putin that evil bugger who is to be blamed for all the ills in the world was also there. Stupid logic is stupid. This is the second time that South Korea has chosen China over the US; the US had ALSO pressured South Korea’s president not to join the China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank- a bank which counts many US allies among its members because, let’s face it, bullying gets old quick.
Also of note, China has recently faced a stock-market crash, tumbling economic indicators (can’t export sh** when the American middle class can’t buy) and an enormous explosion in its Tianjin province. What a splendid coincidence… Interesting times ahead.
