A pilot of a British Airways plane, with 137 people on board, has witnessed a drone striking the Airbus A320 while it was preparing to land at Heathrow airport, London.
Although no one was injured, and the plane managed to land safely, it has been reported that this drone incident is one of many in the last six months. Around Heathrow, this is becoming a concern, and an official report has been requested on the matter. In the past 6 months, a 777 aircraft reported an unidentified drone flying only 70 feet from the aircraft for a distance.
The report requested will delve into the ramifications of drones intercepting and crashing into planes of all sizes.
The police are investigating today’s incident, but no arrests have been made. However, detectives are refusing to rule out whether it was terror related, or not.
Scotland Yard commented on the incident, saying “a pilot on an inbound flight into Heathrow Airport from Geneva reported to police that he believed a drone had struck the aircraft” at around 12.50pm.’ The spokeswoman continued to say that “the flight landed at Heathrow Terminal Five safely. It transpired that an object, believed to be a drone, had struck the front of the aircraft.”
It comes after comments made by Prime Minister David Cameron about ISIS and the plausibility of dirty bomb attacks. “When it comes to the problems of international terrorism, the concept of terrorists and nuclear materials coming together is obviously a very chilling prospect and something, in light of the Belgian attacks, we know is real.”
Since the drone crash, the plane has been examined by ground engineers and has since been deemed safe to fly.
