Changing the world 1 Billion trees at a time… with Drones!

Airborne drones, according to Lauren Fletcher, of BioCarbon Engineering, will be able to assist in a reforestation initiative to plant trees at an astonishing rate. A combination of auditing, mapping and planting is to be implemented by the flying drones.

A company, BioCarbon Engineering, has had their sights on a mission to counter industrial-scale deforestation with industrial-scale reforestation by the use of these drones, claiming it will be cost effective and productive. CEO and Ex-NASA engineer Lauren Fletcher proposes two drone operators could control a fleet of drones. This fleet would have the capacity to plant 36,000 trees per day, with the potential to reach their target of 1 billion plants per year.

Policy Manager of BioCarbon Engineering Martin Tengler stated that “… now is in fact the right time” proposing drone technology has developed to a juncture where mass deployment is a realistic and probable option. Coming third place at the annual Drones for Good competition, and with a team comprising mainly of PhDs, this is a mission that can become successful.

According to BioCarbon’s mission statement, “We are going to counter industrial scale deforestation using industrial scale reforestation. Destruction of global forests from lumber, mining, agriculture, and urban expansion destroys 26 billion trees each year. We believe that this industrial scale deforestation is best combated using the latest automation technologies.”

The plans are in their infancy, but target problem areas such as Brazil and other South American sites that have suffered mass deforestation. The team have been roading it recently in hopes of winning awards while showcasing their drone project. It’ll be a case of ‘the sooner the better’ for their project to get off the ground, but relying on 20K awards to help propel it, and how much is actually needed, is still under wraps.
