Police in China have announced that they have found a woman who left home from her parents 10 years ago, living in an internet café, playing games.

The woman, Xiao Yun, 24, is said to have left her home in the eastern city of Zhejiang when she was 14. Since then, her parents had never heard from her.

According to her [Xiao Yun] own account of the story, she left her parents after a heated argument over money issues and vowed never to return to them again… but the local police found her on November 27th on a routine checkup at an internet cafe, in the city of Hangzhou.

After the police interrogated her, it was revealed that she has spent the past 10 years living in the internet café and various public bathhouses, playing the multiplayer shooter game, Crossfire, most of the time. Police said she was particularly good at playing the multiplayer game, so other gamers paid her to play the game for them. Through this, she was able to get some money to survive. Crossfire is an online, tactical first-person shooter for Microsoft Windows created by South Korean developer, SmileGate.

Police called to inform her parents and they arranged for her parents to meet her. After meeting her mother for the first time in 10 years, Xiao Yun told the Qianjiang Evening News that she left home because her parents refused to give her money for her daily upkeep.

“I had run away from home before. And at that time when I tried to ask my dad for some money, and my parents wouldn’t give it to me, saying I must be lying. So I decided to run away for good,” she said.

Local media reports said her father had presumed she was dead, but her mother hoped she was alive and would one day return home.

Police said they caught her using a fake ID and said that she had been using that fake ID since she left home. Her mother admitted to treating her strictly and that that was probably what made her leave home.

“I haven’t changed my mobile number in the past 10 years. I thought she might get in touch when she thought of me. I have a quicker temper and a strong character. I had indeed scolded her before. But after 10 years, she is a grown-up now. I will not tell her off again,” she said.

Police added that she has been fined 1,000 Yuan for using the fake ID. Her mother also added that she is very delighted to reunite with her daughter once again, promising to change the way she used to treat her.
