South Korea has a bike lane that sits in the middle of a highway and is fitted with a solar panel roof. 20 miles long, it stretches between the two cities of Daejeon and Sejong. In addition to providing a safe place for the cyclists to ride, the route also provides electricity for areas nearby. The bike path has become so popular that a new lane is being planned around the city of Sejong that will stretch for a whopping 217 miles.
This idea is different from the solar bike path that had opened recently in the Netherlands, which is a solar roadway. This project is a bit different since it is a paved road with a solar roof.
Solar energy is on pace to become the dominant form of energy on the planet; many experts believe that this shift will be occurring in the next few years, as solar technology becomes cheaper and more available to the average person… Thanks ironically, at least in part, to China which is churning these out at a rapid clip. As long as they intend to eventually use these panels themselves, I certainly think they’re doing a better job than the number 2 polluter in the world… But I digress.
There have been many breakthroughs in solar technology in recent times, and a variety of creative devices designed to make use of these breakthroughs are being installed all over the world.
