Southern Germany, at around 300 kms from Munich, an axe wielding 17-year-old began attacking commuters on a train just outside of Wuerzburg. Reports coming in suggest that the Afghan refugee began shouting “Allahu Akbar” (God is greatest) during his rampage, which saw 17 people injured or in shock, with 3 critically wounded.
Police shot the attacker dead, shortly after the carnage.
Hours after the incident, Germany’s Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann has said it is too early to speculate on motives. However, The Mirror has reported an Islamic State flag was discovered in the room where the teenage Afghan refugee was staying.
“The attacker appears to have been a 17-year-old Afghan who has been living in Ochsenfurt for some time,” Herrmann commented on the situation so far. He went on to say, however that ISIS links are yet to be established.
“There are witnesses that suggest there may be an Islamic background to this but that is far from clear at this point.”
Shockwaves are flowing through Europe after last Thursday’s massacre in Southern France, Nice, where 84 were killed during a firework display celebrating Bastille Day. At least 18 more are still said to be in critical condition and fighting for their lives.
French authorities say the attack was carefully planned: Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel had support, with texts discovered of him asking an unnamed person to “bring more weapons.”
Meanwhile, Amaq, the online news agency for IS was reported to have claimed the axe attack 9 hours ago.
“The perpetrator of the stabbing attack in Germany was one of the fighters of the Islamic State and carried out the operation in answer to the calls to target the countries of the coalition fighting the Islamic State,” the official statement said.
Wurzburg police have stated that the attacker, still yet to be officially identified, managed to leave the train before police could shoot him.
Although ranging reports suggest the Islamic State is behind this, conclusive evidence is yet to be released. A spokesman for the police said that currently, “at this time everything is possible.”

“Germany’s Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann” is not correct. Hermann is the state minister of the interior of bavaria. Germany’s Interior Minister is Thomas de Maizière.
