A shopping mall in Brazil has begun recycling its daily food waste to help grow a selection of fruits and vegetables in the mall’s very own rooftop garden. Every day this shopping mall in São Paulo, Brazil, was throwing away as much as 900 lbs of food waste every day. However, now the mall is converting its waste into compost to be used in their rooftop garden.
“We notice that people waste a huge amount of food, so beyond our objective of creating organic compost, we use this to create new food. It is a cycle in which we make food out of food,” voices one of the projects members. “This is what it means to be sustainable.”
The malls rooftop garden and recycling program is not only a perfect example of sustainability, it also shows that if implemented across multiple industries, initiatives like this could significantly reduce the amount of recyclable food waste that ends up in landfills across the globe.
