Man Fakes Suicidal Thoughts on Facebook to “Test” Suicide Prevention Tool

24

Shane Tusch learned about the effectiveness of the suicide prevention tool on Facebook the difficult way. What began as an endeavor to check that the tool actually works, finished with landing him in a mental health facility for 72 hours!

A little more than a few weeks ago, the 48-year-old Facebook user read about the new tool on Facebook that is supposed to assist in suicide prevention by locking out accounts of users, after being ‘reported’ by their buddies, that are having suicidal thoughts. Users that have been deemed ‘suicidal’ must then follow the suicide prevention outlines on Facebook to unlock their accounts.

The San Mateo resident chose to assess the functionality of the tool by posting about his frustrations, including the likely strategy of hanging himself at the Golden Gate Bridge. Neither his wife nor his buddies knew about this endeavor. As you can see from the posts, Tusch decided to use his actual Facebook profile for this particular experiment.

Unsurprisingly, friends of Tusch became distressed over the posts and one of them flagged his posts as suicidal. Facebook immediately locked out the account on 26th of February. Another man, who viewed his posts, phoned the cops.

Later, Tusch, who is a part time electrician and an activist, was questioned by San Mateo authorities regarding the suicidal posts and he admitted that he was the author of the them.

  1. What an utter fool. What did he think? That people with mental illness get super dooper lovely treatment in posh 5 star facilities if they feel suicidal?

He got exactly what he asked for so what’s he moaning about?

    • While mental patients don’t get “super dooper lovey treatment”, mental hospitals aren’t that bad… I once spent a while in one, and it was clean, the food was good (once you get off unit), it’s warm, and the only thing to complain about is your own feelings, so…yeah.

  2. I’m not on facebook’s side but this guy seems really stupid. Anyone with information concerning someone’s safety is obligated to report it. That includes Facebook too. If you hear someone’s going to kill themselves of course the first reaction is to freak out and try get them help. Especially when it’s a public post like that… usually it’s a cry for help.

    • Yeah, and that kind of “help”, if anything, makes people suicidal. You should obviously help people with their troubles, but sending them to almost torture-like situation isn’t helping.

  3. The guy post to test the system. It works. And now he starts complaining. I think he would have complained either way. Complain if it works, complain if it doesn’t.

  4. I think it is a great idea to have and he needed to be assessed to make sure he was not going to hurt himself and that’s what they did. It great to have and would have been great to have for all the times we have lost someone who we just couldn’t get to. I think it should be kept available.

  5. I’m one who does have depression n this guy did a dumb thing but proved a good point all’s it will do is overcrowed the hospitals n shit I agree with this guy 100% he did wat he thought would open ppls eyes Facebook is to much for slot of ppl u got ppl on there who get upset bout something that makes ppl think like that and No he should not have sat there for 72 hours

Shane you were very gutsy to put that on Facebook but u proved a great point

  7. Since he didn’t tell anyone he was going to conduct this experiment how was anyone to know otherwise? There are people out there who are truly concerned and would jump in try to do something to keep suicide from happening. To those people, it’s very real. Saying one is going to commit suicide scares people especially family members.

I’m glad that tool is in place. Had this man been serious, the tool would have saved his life. Also if someone is intent on suicide they are going to keep quiet about it for the most part. Most people would be shocked to find out if someone they knew killed themselves and wonder why they didn’t see the signs. Because they purposely didn’t let anyone see the signs. They might go on social media for a fast goodbye and then it would be over with before anyone could reach them.

  8. I think facebook and any other messeger program/site should be removed, it cause alot of bad things like cyber-bulling PLUS that the young ones and olders, but the younger ones get stuck to it, and its very difficult to communicate in social life. More like destroying them.

  9. Anyone actually read facebooks terms of service when they registered their account? You have NO rights to anything on their; Facebook OWNS you. Anything they do they cover their own ass for, you seriously signed your life away. Im not saying what they do is right or wrong, just letting you know it’s your fault for letting this happen.

  10. I Can’t believe how many people are facetiously commenting on this. When it comes down to it, no FB does not have the power to help those whom are suicidal. We need to be able to show people that life is worth living by being their guiding light. Stay connected to your family and friends through love/compassion and notice the little things that may be sign of depression.

Problem is that (Capitalist) society has so many tools to make you disassociate with your world while making you feel more connected at the same time. I don’t blame people for wanting to call it quits, shit from time to time, I take a good hard look at the world and i wonder: is it worth the turmoil? I think so; positive loving energy is so much stronger that it’s negative counter part. It’s so strong in fact that it can pull one out of depression or a suicidal mentality. I know because I’ve been there.

In closing, this is a very great point made and will open up people eye’s to how much FB actually cares about it’s user’s or on how much we care about each other. Ask yourself this: If someone kills themselves and it doesn’t impact your life in particular, does it matter? In my opinion, yes; It sends ripples through out the family and friends of said person. Kid’s scarred, Wive’s widowed, and friendships/relationships are severed. Those people who are still here have to deal with this trauma on a daily basis. I think the best way to combat this is by fighting it with love. A company with ideals based around love and empathy will be of greater help to people than one who’s main intention it to turn a profit.

Peace and love everyone! Anonymous is no one, but yet it is everyone! Anonymous is voicelessness being heard! Open your eye’s and heart’s today and make the world better for our children! <3

  11. And you are supposed to be the awakened community that will change the world for the better? Your comments are lacking empathy, intelligence or understanding.

Stop thinking too much of yourselves! The world is going down the drain and you are acting like spoiled little brats!
