San Antonio Spurs have announced that Becky Hammon, who serves as an assistant coach for the team during the regular season, will serve as their head coach during the NBA Summer League starting on July 1 in Las Vegas, making her the first woman to become the head coach for an NBA Summer League team. Will Hardy, the team’s video coordinator, will coach the Spurs as they return to a reboot of the Salt Lake City Summer League.

Hammon became the first female full-time assistant coach in NBA history when she joined the Spurs before the 2014-15 season. She played 16 seasons in the WNBA, making the All-Star team six times, and moved to the Spurs bench upon her retirement.
“Nothing in my life has really ever been easy. I’ve always been someone who did it uphill. I’m up for challenges. I’m up for being outside the box, making tough decisions and challenges. … And I’m a little bit of an adrenaline junkie. Throw those all in there and this was the perfect challenge and opportunity,” Hammon said in August.
The Spurs are widely regarded as the smartest and best coached team in the NBA. Many of the best coaches in the league were either players or assistants for their legendary head coach, Gregg Popovich. Their tactics and strategies are widely imitated throughout the league.
