Propaganda and Islam: What you’re not Being Told

Propaganda is the wheel by which the government steers the bus of a nation; typically driving it into war or off the cliff of humanity. It is amazing to see how many people who are otherwise rational human beings will blindly follow the herd on the matter of how subhuman a perceived national enemy is. The western media wonderfully paints Islam as a death cult bent on world domination. Over and over again the American populace is shown footage of the atrocities committed by fanatics or of Arab men burning American flags. The problem, of course, is that this isn’t remotely representative of the Islamic population of the world. Are there Muslims who employ terrorism? Of course. Are there Christians who employ terrorism? Of course. There are even Buddhists who employ terrorism.

Some general facts about Islam might help break the noose of wartime propaganda that rests around America’s neck. Below are a list of statements this journalist has seen in the last week on social media, followed by the data to put that statement in perspective.

“All [or most] Muslims are terrorists.”

There are 1.6 billion Muslims in the world. The much-discussed ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) organization, which has been described as the “richest terrorist group in the world” can only field between 7,000 and 15,000 troops in its battle to create a fundamentalist homeland. Even taking the highest estimate of their troop strength means that fewer than 1 out of every 106,000 Muslims from all over the world are actually willing to take up arms and fight for the fundamentalist dream. The Iraqi army, however, can field 250,000 soldiers to fight against that fundamentalist vision. That figure does not include irregular forces allied to the Iraqi army. The premise that all Muslims are terrorists falls flat by a mere study of the numbers. It isn’t a majority of Muslims. It isn’t even 1% of Muslims.

“Muslims want Sharia law.”

While many Muslims believe in Sharia law, what is considered Sharia law is not universal. In Lebanon, which has been considered a hotbed of Islamic terrorism ever since the bombing of the US Embassy in Beirut, 38% of Muslims don’t even believe it is the Word of God. Among those that do believe it to be the direct Word of God, only 29% believe in making it the legal system for the country, and a majority of Lebanese Muslims don’t believe Sharia law should apply to non-Muslims.  Even among those that believe whole-heartedly in Sharia law, they don’t necessarily believe in some of the more violent aspects. The crime of adultery is punishable by stoning under some forms of Sharia law. Some quick and simple math shows that in Lebanon, less than 3% of Muslims believe that punishment should be applied to the population at large. Meanwhile in America’s heartland, a political candidate has advocated or silently endorsed the idea of stoning homosexuals.  The vast majority of Muslims believe that Sharia law should be used to settle family or property disputes among Muslims.

Some countries have higher rates of belief in using Sharia law, and some have lower. Lebanon was chosen because it falls in the middle as far as averages go.

“They beat their women.”

First, the very phase “their women” suggests that the individual might fall close to the more radical elements of Islam in regards to the belief that women are property. Yes, some Muslim men beat “their women.” In the United States 25% of women will be beaten by “their men” in their lifetime. This is not an Islamic issue, this is an issuerising from the idea that women are property and somehow belong to the men. If this is justification for war, the United States might consider invading Belfast, where 60 cases of domestic violence are reported daily.

“They are stuck in the Stone Age, and they want to stay there.”

This statement marginalizes the thousands of Muslim men and women who sit in prison for attempting to change their government and those that died in the attempt. Political prisoners throughout the Arab world sit rotting away for attempting to bring about change in their nations. They are Muslims. Four Saudi Princesses are currently being starved to death by the King for speaking out in favor of women’s rights. Countless journalists and bloggers sit behind bars for questioning their governments. The US government continually props up these brutal dictatorships with multi-million dollar arms deals and keeps the power in the hands of those that don’t want change.

“Muhammad was a pedophile and his wife was only 6 [or 7].”

Most historians agree that Aisha and Muhammad were married after she reached puberty. They place her age, on average, around 13 years old at the time of marriage, though she may have been betrothed to him much earlier. Americans need to keep in mind that while they might not have heard of Islam prior to September 11th, Muhammad lived in the early 600s A.D. It might surprise them to learn that marriage at such an early age was extremely common not only in the Arab world, but the Western world as well. King John of England married a12-year-old around 1198. Romeo’s love, Juliet, was only 13. No subset of people is more hated in the West than pedophiles. An attempt to cast the founder of the perceived enemy as a pedophile would certainly benefit the war effort.

“Muslims take child brides and rape children.”

Does it occur in the Muslim world? Sure. It occurs in the United States as well, typically deep in America’sheartland. The Catholic Church is well-known for its abuse of the youth. Again this is a worldwide issue, not an Islamic one. There is not a single Middle Eastern country listed among the top 20 nations with a high prevalence of child brides.

Conclusion:

Most of the information that is spread via social media is simply not accurate. It only serves to plant the idea in the American psyche that somehow the United States must save the Muslims from themselves. The goal of this propaganda is to make Americans believe that Muslims are somehow lesser people. After all, it’s easier to condemn people to die in air strikes if they aren’t really human. Before clicking the share or retweet button on an inflammatory article, try to determine if the information being presented is an accurate portrayal of the Muslim world, or if you are simply furthering the government’s march towards war.

The Islamic world is not without its problems. The struggle for equal rights for women and homosexuals continues to meet roadblock after roadblock on the streets of Amman, Damascus, Riyadh, and Tehran; however, if the United States seeks to use this as justification for intervention, maybe it should invade Mississippi orArkansas.

      • Actually Paul, if we’re talking about the early human population of the “stone age” or neolithic period (c. 9000 BCE) then yes, there is plenty of academic evidence that religious practices did exist.This was a pivotal time too when the hunter / gatherer method was still in place but humans were moving towards gradually becoming stationary creatures. Places like Golbeki Tepe have plenty of evidence to suggest this. Perhaps it wasn’t an organized religion as we are used to today, but it was there. Just a thought. Have a great day! 🙂

        If the U.S. has such a respect for human life, women, and children, then please do clear some things up for me:

        Why are there so many homeless veterans who do not receive the help they need? Homeless people in general are dying all the time when there are more than enough empty houses to house them all five or six times over.

        Children are starving and living on the streets here. Public school children are denied lunch and made to go hungry if they do not have money to pay for lunch. That does not seem like respect to me!

        Women are objectified by the media, used for sex, and paid less in the workforce than men are for doing the exact same jobs. America has a rape culture that is beyond disgusting, where rapists go free and victims are blamed. Shit, it seems to me that ‘Murican’s want women wearing the head to toe black sacks so that *gasp!* God forbid a man sees bare legs and can’t control his pathetic cock and rapes her! It’s her fault; if she had been wearing a sheet, she wouldn’t have tempted him!

        You seem as ignorant about your own religion as you do about everything else as well. Even religious scholars know that December 25th is absolutely NOT the day that Christ was born (IF he even lived in the first place, which has also not been proven). However, Jesus would have been ashamed of you personally, for accusing Muslims of being terrible people, while allowing atrocities to happen to people in your own home country. Sure, he would have forgiven you, since that’s how he rolled, but he also would not condemn innocent Muslims.

        • ok lets clear this bullshit up. In EVERY state, public schools have a free and reduced lunch program so there are NO starving children in school. It has been reported the school lunch is the only meal some children get.

          As to the so called rape culture in the US, I can assure this problem is much worse in Islamic countries. Show me one case where a rapist has gone free and the victim was blamed in a case where a rape actually occurred, because there are plenty of case where a woman screamed rape only to discover she lied.

          As to “veterans dying in the streets”, prove it. If they do it’s because they don’t ask for help. The V.A. has programs for that as well. There are low to zero interest loans available to Vets, all they need do is apply. Get your facts straight before you make ridiculous claims.

          Women are objectified by television because since the beginning of television it was learned that sex sells. These women are also paid very well for their adds. The women who don’t like it, don’t do it. If you don’t like it, don’t watch it. I personally don’t care to see it as I view porn as defiling the moral fabric of any population, but we have basic human rights which means as long as they don’t hurt anyone they have a right to make it. Doesn’t mean I have to watch it or agree with it, but those who do have a right to it.

          We all know December 25 was not Christ’s actual birthday, it was taken to cover a pagan holiday. The birthday of Jesus was never recorded so no one living knows. However, even Muslims believe Jesus lived, they just believe him to be a profit, not the son of God.

          Most Christians are not the hate filled, child molesting, imbeciles you have been led to believe they are. Now that that has been cleared up, pull YOUR head out of your ass and get busy leading a productive life instead of listening to the ridiculous stories anonymous puts out, most of which have been proven false with just a little fact checking.

Pakistan and Afghanistan for exaple tried to fight against Al-Qaeda for years and all they got is a civil war and a lot of dead innocent ppl because no matter what they do the terrorist organization always over power them and they just keep coming and some how they have a budget and an arm power that seem to be endless

  9. See i have nothing against muslims or you know followers of Islam as such. They are also just following the religion they were born into. But the trutg of the matter is that muslims (good people though they are) are sometimes irrationally defensive about themselves and their contemporary politics. Many of them would be well educated and know that their are flaws kn their religion but wouldn’t publicly accept that or be willing to change. People mught not want to follow the sharia law but the fact is that saudi follows sharia law. The fact remains that they are easily rallied by some fanatic leaders. Even the other religions have their flaws. But somehow i believe muslims across the world have inculcated this victim mentality and go back into the shell of their religion whenever they feel threatened. A manifestation of this is pretty clear in india. Although a lot of educated and peace loving muslims leave here, they have reduced their religion to the diktat of the clergy.
    Last of all i believe it’s time we gave up looking into the past to sanction the actions of today. What happened or did not happen a centure ago doesn’t matter. We need to get ober this childish human tendency.

      1) Muslims murder their children — Contrary to that , Islam when it started from Mecca , the first prohibition ordered was to stop the burying of children especially females that was a custom in Arabs before Islam . Here is the ayaat that clearly instructs that

Contrary to that , Islam also forbids killing of child via Prregnancy ( Abortion ) , so a religion that does that will never allow killing of children for sure . Contrary to that , infact most children are murdered in pregnancy in United states and west than in any Islamic country .
      2- Childhood marriages – It is a falsehood custom rather than part of Islam . Such customs were prevalent in Arabs , English , Indians everywhere . Islam only allows marriage when both male and female reach adulthood and in state of marriage ! The marriage happens with their opinion . This is done in Islam so that both at the age of adulthood refrain from committing adultery or rape that both lead to dreadful consequences !
      3- Rape children — I think thosw who make such statements are not actually known of the facts and figures . Islam has strict punishments for those that commit rape that includes lashes and hanging as well in Shariah Law. Adding so , many children face sexual abuse in west than in any Islamic country !

I have studied Islam and my boyfriend is Muslim, but there are a few things that don’t sit well with me in this religion. It is debatable, but the Qur’an states that it is permissible for men to beat women “lightly.” Even if they beat them lightly, domestic violence is never ok. Does anyone have any further knowledge on this? Also, men can get 4 wives (without telling his wife that he is getting married, and she has no power to change his decision), men can marry Christians and Jews but women cannot, and women are viewed as half a witness in legal matters.

    I have many Muslim friends who are wonderful people, and I have a boyfriend who asks me why I don’t believe in Islam, and these are just some of the reasons I don’t think the religion is fair for both genders.

    Generally a crime is simply a crime. But the difference is when one tries to justify his/her actions. If one justifies a crime action with non-religious base then legal action will be taken according to the land low argued with non-religious logic. But if one justifies a crime action with religious base that will start to become dangerous. Because religious books are differently interpreted by the believers which means when a crime is backed by a religious ideology it could be portrayed as right action by some believer of that religion. Therefore there is a risk of spreading of crime when such a religious reasoning is used. This is what happening in the current terrorist�s situation who are found to be Muslims. They are killing in the name of Allah. Even the other fighters in Syria (not designated as terrorists by international communities) fight in the name of Allah. They have been heard saying �Allah wuakber� while shooting, bombing, beheading�� hmmmmmmm I�ve never heard other �terrorist� killing and praising his God at the same time. That is what made the Muslims look like terrorists though that is wrong.
    – Of course other religions have done that many years ago like the crusades. Even now in some part of central Africa Christians and Muslims were fighting. And of course Christians did also kill Muslims but they are just taking sides of same people not praising God in their massacre (the same goes to the Muslims in this case). Their war is equivalent to a civil war between different races like the Ruanda�s civil war, Ukraine�s civil war �. Therefore the risk of a civil war to spread across boarder and become terrorism is very much lesser than that of religious ideology based war/crime.

Therefore within the country people highly oppose the government since the government couldn�t provide when the country is very rich in resources. Therefore following this chaos different western countries come to the country both to end the disorder but to get a benefit primarily. Different western countries (sometimes Arab countries too) having different agenda end up supporting opposing fighting groups which even worsen the disaster. Some intelligent(analyst) groups understands the westerns intention and uses that as a propaganda to unite people and frame opposite groups as alliance to the westerns. Then they win the war with the help of one group of foreign country. The winner then portraits westerns (except the allay) as the enemy of the country. This indeed unites the nation against western as all gets a common enemy. But becoming the government they become the new king rather than being a better administrator.     – Non secular nations are highly exposed to extremism because any negativity from external society against the government/country could be portrayed as an act against the religion by the leaders (knowingly or unknowingly). And this image has a higher possibility to sink in the religious teaching because of the fusion of religion and administration.
    – The Saudi Arabia case differs from other Muslim countries because the administration shares the oil to develop the country rather than selfishly corrupt it only for its own. Therefore it seems to be stable but human right and inequality issues are still raised. A society never stops to ask for more but it gets violent and become chaotic if the issue is life threatening like poverty.
    – Conclusion
    – I do not believe neither Muslims nor Islam is about terrorism.
    – I believe computing religion is hypocrisy. Teaching and lecturing is a better way to communicate. Religion should not be judged by the actions of the members but through its dogma.
    – Whatever �holy� people do on their time, their action bases their contextual culture. I don�t think it should be a dogma of the religion. That is their version of interpretation today we should have ours and ours should respect others opinion belief and religion. That is a final solution towards the current situation.
    – I wonder and admire how people submit themselves to religious teachings specially and mostly Muslims, but I am afraid they are submitting themselves to the leaders (preachers) and sometimes become a puppet. I wonder when people desperately gather to hear the religious head /leader talk and they take actions without using their own mind. This has been the case of genocide in many cases including xenophobia incidence in South Africa that has started with the speech of one man and other terrorism acts too.
    – I believe any religion advocates peace and love if not I don�t know how it becomes one. I am a Christian and bible teaches love. No disrespect but I don�t listen to what a leader says other than these. I did not read any other religious book but I am sure it advocates the same.
    – There should be no generalization. Domination should not lead to generalization. Just because a nation has more number of Muslims it should not be a Muslim country. Just because the Christianity has more followers than others it should not mean the world is a Christian world and so on�. Religion is more towards our after life; while administration includes our current life. The mix is not showing a good solution. Secularism, secularism, and secularism!!!!!!!
    – Please all condemn any inhuman act whenever you get that chance in Medias like Facebook and so on. Because recently on social Medias I observed that Muslims are condemning only when Muslims area attacked and others are not also condemning. I think that attitude will deeply increase the gap and add to the generalization of Muslims as terrorists as Muslim nations paint westerns as anti-Muslims.

Hell no but i don’t hate every jewish person i meet i hate the government the people in power not the civilians i don’t agree with them but i sure as hell respect their opinion and believes. do i agree with homosexuals?   89. Firstly -I don’t believe all Muslims are terrorist nor that Muslims want the world to be ruled under Sharia- especially those living in Western Countries.
    However going by the stats that the Justin King has presented it’s clear to me that the majority of Muslims living in the Middle East and parts of Asia and Africa believe Sharia should be the law of the land.
    This article is total BS 9no offence Justin King) and extremely deceptive.
    Example- the Justin King uses stats regarding Muslims from the Pew Research Center. Justin is very impressed that “only” 38% of Lebanese Muslims don’t believe that Sharia is the word of God- The “actual” pew question basically asks – Is Sharia
    a) developed by man based on the word of God
    b) or the revealed word of God.
    38% agreed with (a) but 49% agreed with (b) which is one of the biggest problems facing Islam (in my opinion). While Sharia is a guide for Muslims on how to live their lives it also demands brutal and barbaric punishments and is unjust to mostly women and the poor.
    If the majority of Muslims believed that Sharia is man made from the word of GOD (especially those who hold power within the religion) then the Imams and scholars would have continued to update it throughout the centuries to fit in with 21st century. I doubt public stonnings would still be happening or other barbaric practices.
    Would Justin King would say if a pew poll came out revealing “ONLY” 38% of Americans believe the world is flat? Think about that.
    Kosovo would have been a better example to use where 33% believe it to be the word of man and 30% Revealed by God. In fact Muslims make up 90% of the population but almost all are moderate Sunni- likely the reason why there is no horrid Muslim secular fighting occurring like in the Middle East.
    Child marriage- Another sugar coat or cop out- “not a single Middle Eastern Country
    is listed in the top 20 Nations”- In fact Nigeria holds the number one spot where 94% of the population is Muslim- FACT most child marriages are practiced in mostly majority Muslim Countries- Then there are those Countries that have high number of people who are not Muslim but are indigenous to the Country and practice ancient ceremonies which is still wrong and needs to be outlawed.

    Justin – you cannot compare Pastors or rightwing nut cases who publicly state they’d like to see law changes or stonnings, to Countries that have ACTUAL laws making it illegal to be gay, have sex out of wedlock and have ACTUAL punishments for these “law breakers that include, beheadings, whippings, crucifixions and cutting off hands, just to name a few-

    Domestic Violence is a world wide epidemic but in Countries that live under Sharia law it is legal- women have no chance of protecting themselves. Christianity gives men control over women but sovereign LAW makes it illegal to abuse your spouse. Whilst I agree that Western Countries have a long way to go in this area (along with sexual harassment and sexual abuse of women) at least it’s not legal to do so.
    Before anyone starts accusing me of being Islamophobic or a bigot- I’m an Atheist who believes all religion are ridiculous in this day and age. However I will fight for your right to practice your religion but will NOT stay silent on human rights abuses especially when in comes to women and children. I will not call it preserving “culture or religion”- I will call it what it is “human rights abuses and believe the West should impose sanctions on these Countries just as they did to South Africa to end apartheid- what’s the difference? oh wait OIL.
    There is no excuse and we all need to stand up for the rights of individuals who cannot have a voice for fear of persecution, jail or death.People are suffering and being “PC” helps the oppressors.

As much as you try to defend Islam and Muslims, its unfortunate that even though all muslims are NOT terrorists, all (Or at least a very very high proportion) of terrorists are Muslim, and for that reason alone, there has to be a cautionary approach to whomever believes in that religion, extreamist or not.
