Secret Saint: The Quiet, Humane, Passionate Part Of Humble Paul Walker

5

Hours before Paul Walker died in a car accident, the 40-year-old humanitarian was co-hosting a charity event for Philippines Typhoon victims in Santa Clarita through his non-profit organization, Reach Out Worldwide (ROWW) founded in 2010 following the devastating earthquakes in Haiti. The Fast & Furious actor was doing a good deed, and giving back to the community on the day of his tragic death.

Haiti’s Impact On Paul & Vice Versa

As part of a relief team responding to the massive earthquakes that had devastated Haiti on January 12, 2010, Walker saw a gap between the availability of skilled resources and the requirement for such personnel in post-disaster situations. Following the trip, he contacted a group of his friends to assist him in forming ROWW, intent on filling this unmet need.

A couple of months later, Walker and ROWW traveled to Haiti to help build shelters and provide medical help. IV bags, tubing and other supplies were brought to orphanages and refugee camps in support.

“Because of my travels with work and pleasure, a lot of the times disasters would strike in areas that I’d been. You think of the faces – they might not be people you’re in contact with but you can’t help but wonder how that family was you had dinner with. That stuff starts crossing your mind and you feel so helpless. I would be consumed with anger, like, ‘F*$k! I wanna be there, I wanna do whatever I can’. One of my best friends had heard it too many times and ultimately he just held me accountable. He punked me out: ‘So you gonna pack your bags and go to Haiti and help out or what? I tell you what, if you’re gonna go, I’m going with ya’.” Walker told The Telegraph.

Devoted Humanitarian Giving Personal Help

On February 27, 2010, a magnitude 8.8 earthquake ravaged Chile, triggered a tsunami, and caused an estimated $15 billion to 30 billion in damage. In March, Walker went to Chile to offer his help and support to the people injured in the quake. He made connections, used his influence to set up a hospital on the beach, and helped out in the clinic by checking blood pressure and doing basic medical checks.

“You know, I have a lot of friends that surf and travel down here in Chile,” he told a local Chile TV station of why he decided to come and help. “They told me and said, ‘Man, it’s going to be bad.’ The thing’s that incredible to me, is the morale [down here], the spirit. It’s strong!”

Under-Radar Charity

Walker became the face of Davidoff Cool Water in 2011 because the company had offered to make a contribution to one of his favorite charities. “They were like, we think you’re good for the product because of your love for the ocean and marine biology and you’ve been doing the charitable stuff and the Great White Shark research, and we want to make a donation to the Surfrider Foundation or Heal the Bay. So then I’m going, maybe this isn’t so bad! It was a good experience. A few years ago if you had asked me to do this I don’t think I would have been comfortable enough in my own skin to do it,” he told OK! magazine.

An Inspirational Soul

When a monster tornado devastated Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on April 27, 2011, Walker went to help the poorest, who were either trapped in their homes or had their houses completely destroyed. He did so with no fanfare, and spent thousands on equipment to cut through the debris.

ROWW Operations Manager JD Dorfman told Daily Mail, “He was on the front line and inspired human beings, who were thinking the world doesn’t give a damn about me. Paul did. It’s beautiful to watch. Paul always foot the bills of these operations with the cost running into millions – apart from a $50,000 donation from the chainsaw producer Stihl after they saw what Paul was doing in Alabama. Stihl wanted to be a part of it. They liked Paul’s no fuss attitude, but even their generous donation was never going to be enough to fill in the holes.”

A Good Deal Indeed

In the spring of 2013, tornados ravished the Oklahoma landscape and left many without homes. This was the same week as Fast & Furious 6 hit theaters. While ROWW deployed teams at the ground level, Walker reached out to his Facebook fans offering to make a donation for every person who posted a picture of their Fast & Furious 6 movie ticket.

Leading By Example

Walker posted a series of tweets to help raise awareness of a terminally ill young kid named Dalton Andrews. It had been on Dalton’s bucket list to reach 1,000-plus likes, and Walker’s encouragement of his fans tipped the scales. Andrews’ family posted a picture and message remembering the actor as “an amazing, wonderful man”.

Some people play a hero, Paul was a hero. Paul was an honorable, hardworking, dedicated, respectful man with a humble spirit who shared his blessings with those who needed it most. It was an honor and a privilege to be able to work with, learn and look up to someone who walked the walk,” Dorfman concluded.

  1. some people, you never meet them, yet they touch your lives. Paul was among those. The work he did is truly admirable and it’s unfortunate that most people came to know about him after he passed away. The life he lead is worth looking upto. A Good actor and a great human.
