A new study from the University of Maryland found that male attractiveness can be a disadvantage when it comes to job interviews; according to assistant professor Marko Pitesa, handsome men intimidate employers, who see them as a potential threat.
The research team did find, however, that if the interviewer was told he would be working alongside the interviewee (and so in a position that was not as threatening to his own), rather than have the interviewee working for him, attractive men were favored.
241 adults were asked to evaluate fictional job candidates based on fictitious qualifications and experience, with men assessing men and women assessing women. Fictional candidates were assigned computer-generated headshots that were somehow determined to be either attractive or unattractive.
A second experiment involved 92 people, who were asked to judge their own competitors or partners in a quiz game. Again, headshots that portrayed a variety of attractiveness were used and the same pattern of discrimination was seen.
In another test, women were asked to judge men and men were made to judge women, and in a final experiment, actual student candidates were used. In both cases, people opted to work with attractive men but compete against … “uglier” men.
‘The way we explain it here, pretty men just seem more competent, so it is actually subjectively rational to discriminate for or against them,’ Pitesa said. Funny that nobody seems to believe me when I say that that’s the reason why I had flunked my last interview…

And would it surprise anyone if attractive women are marred from choice because the other women within the office wouldn’t want more competition either from a career or dating prospective. An ole all time classic scenario is if a prospective employer & wife run a business I bet most wives wouldn’t want another women of within a decade of themselves as they would definitely see them as a potential home wrecker. No surprises really!
