A young mother and her five-month-old son were found alive five days after their Cessna 303 plane crashed in the jungle of western Colombia. María Nelly Murillo Moreno, 19, suffered a broken ankle when the plane that she and her 5-month-old son were flying in crashed on June 20, in the western Colombian department of Chocó.
“It is a very wild area and it was a catastrophic accident. It’s a miracle. His mother’s spirit must have given him strength to survive,” Colombian Air Force colonel Héctor Carrascal told AFP.
Colombian Air Force colonel Rodrigo Zapata told CNN, “It’s a case that caught our attention from the beginning. First of all, it was amazing that even though the cockpit was destroyed, the cabin area sustained very little damage, which explains part of the reason why mother and son survived.”
Carlos, Murillo’s brother, told BBC she managed to open the cabin door and run into the jungle as fire was spreading in the cabin. It was then that she remembered she had a baby and went back for him. She sustained burns to her face, an arm and a leg trying to save the little life. Afraid the plane might explode, she walked into the jungle along the bank of a small river. She kept breastfeeding the infant and drank coconut water to remain hydrated. The brave mother left traces to help rescuers find them, including the baby’s birth certificate, her cell phone, a diaper bag and the pilot’s wallet. After she heard the loudspeakers from the search helicopters, she returned to the crash site and was rescued and flown to a hospital in Quibdó.
“I have a lot of respect for this mother. First of all, she realized she had to get out of the plane with her son right away and managed to open the cabin door in spite of the fact that she had an ankle fracture. She went to great lengths to protect her baby from injury, even suffering multiple burns as she took him out of the burning aircraft. She survived because she never gave up. She’s a very brave woman and a role model,” Zapata added.
