Energy Storage for a Sustainable Home

The wait is over! Tesla announced a home battery and utility-scale battery that will power future homes.

Powerwall is a home battery that charges using electricity generated from solar panels, or when utility rates are low, and powers your home in the evening. It also fortifies your home against power outages by providing a backup electricity supply. Automated, compact and simple to install, Powerwall offers independence from the utility grid and the security of an emergency backup.

Powerwall comes in 10 kWh weekly cycle and 7 kWh daily cycle models. Both are guaranteed for ten years and are sufficient to power most homes during peak evening hours. Multiple batteries may be installed together for homes with greater energy need, up to 90 kWh total for the 10 kWh battery and 63 kWh total for the 7 kWh battery.

Multiple batteries may be installed together.

We had gotten rumor of this new battery back in February when Elon Musk discussed it during an earnings call, but no additional details were made available at that time.

Tesla announced last September its plans to build a new Gigafactory in Reno, Nevada, 62 million has been spent so far. When all is said and done an estimated $5 billion will be spent on this project. Tesla plans to begin building lithium-ion batteries at this facility in 2017.  The lithium-ion battery technology is being positioned to be the front runner in emerging energy storage that also provides supplementary electricity.  Could this technology ultimately threaten our traditional electric grid? These new batteries when combined with the rapidly expanding residential solar market present exciting new opportunity’s for off the grid living.

Tesla Gigafactory Production

Tesla has teamed up with SolarCity, a company chaired by Musk and ran by his cousin Lyndon Rive.  Founded in 2006, the company has over 160,000 customers and controls almost 40% of the residential market.  Solarcity installs panels for both commercial and residential applications and leases them for less than what you pay on your energy bill, and they sell surplus energy back to local utility’s.  This model has proven to be extremely successful for SolarCity. They have begun installing Tesla batteries mostly in commercial buildings at this time.  The batteries allow them to store excess energy for use during peak hours.  This has shown to shave off 20-30 percent of energy bills.  Solar City is currently running a pilot program with around 500 homes in California.  The project is using 10-killowatt-hour battery packs that supply homes with about 2 days of power in the event of an outage.

Electric cars, space exploration, low-cost wireless internet for anyone, and now home batteries.  Tesla Motors Inc has shown us that they are not just car makers, it begs to question what does Tesla have in store for the future?

    • have u read about tesla? do u know he also discovered the “free” energy we have all around us? No fossil fuels.(which is the lifeblood of our planet..we use it..our planet dies) maybe replacing a solar panel every 50 or so years seems much better than burning dirty fuels…paying high gas prices..and utility bills…A car, home etc ran off of solar and or magnetic energy will save US millions and make the power company and oil companies admit the deception they have been selling us all these years 😀

      • Oh you mean the guy, that invented the alternating current. Died penniless, because electrical companies shutdown his greatest invention which was the supply of free wireless electricity because there wouldn’t be any profit from having free electricity yes, I know Tesla was. (T^T) we could of had free electricity!

  1. I am very interested in this product I am a Sovereign woman from the West Kimberley region Australia, and in light of the Governments Closures of Indigenous Communities, with cutting out their water and power supplies, I think this product would help these communities be less reliant on government, and then continually being in threat of being moved off homelands.

I would like to be able to speak wot someone about this. end me an email and I can forward my contact details.

    many thanks and apprecaition.

  2. I am definitely going to buy this once it is available in Australia I am sick and tired of being a whipping boy to the electrictiy companies

  3. There’s tons of solar energy products out there. I don’t get what’s the difference of Tesla. Nice looking? Or just branding?

  4. What a bunch of deceptions by Tesla. These are only batteries, and what they are not yet able to deliver are; batteries, inverters a blend electronics to interface with your home a blended the grid. Mean while, there exists other suppliers to deliver saleable product today.

  5. Solar City’s salesperson (Stephanie with Paramount Co out of California) totally lied to me and sold me the right for them to put a bunch of panels on my home so that they could benefit from it, NOT ME. I was still paying what I had paid before but she told me the electric company could never raise rates for me again. She LIED. They made a killing off my home and probably still are. I sold it. They should not be trusted.
